Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

Lee, that sounds like we have a very similar situation here. Same age, same breed, same type eggs. Ruby's eggs always had bright orangey yolks, very tall-standing, but the whites were like water. Her eggs would every two or three eggs, be almost bleached of all color. Rosemary always laid a light-colored egg, but just lately, they are very elongated, with pointy ends and multiple soft spots in the shells. Both RIR hatchery hens, two and a half years old.

I just collected my eggs and again, I found a white egg for the second day in a row. I have no idea who went in and laid it.

the big end is "textured" is this what you meant?

I wonder about the roosters? Mine just turned a year old and we got him with the girls and for the last month he has been getting nasty. If it weren't for needing fertilized eggs for hatching he would be going into the soup pot! For now that will have to wait until a replacement is ready.

To bad as he is beautiful and until recently been really good with the girls.

I have this really snarly old gander who attacks just about anybody and anything that moves near his coop or wife.

Once he flew at my draft horse and nailed him on the top of his rump. Horse kicked him and sent him sailing. Dislocated his wing and I had to tape him up. His wing dangles a bit now but he can use it.
Last summer he took on the draft horse again and again was sent sailing. This time he broke a leg. When it stopped swelling I taped him up (duck tape)to give it a bit more support but he wouldn't or couldn't walk on it. Daily I carried him back and forth to his pool so he could clean up and paddle around a bit without weight. It went on for the whole summer and into the fall and started to snow. I would have to break ice out of his pool for his bath.

He didn't attack me bad. Mostly bluster. I'd tell him to shut up because nobody else was going to help a snarly old coot. His wife would scold me and follow to the pool.

No improvement for months. I was getting tired of playing nursemaid to a goose that didn't like anybody. Finally made my mind up that he was going to start putting weight on the foot in 2 weeks or it was the end. Within days he started standing and each day walked a tad bit more.

He now cruises around the yard and is back at attacking animals 20x his size.
His wing drags, he walks with a limp and he tells his goose girl he's the most wonderful creature there is. She believes it.

I'm back to not turning my back when I go into his coop and wondering what I will tape up the next time.

Your boy will get better. Keep at it. At least he's a pleasant patient.

my egg had cracks in it like yours does. I cracked mine open and gave it to the cat and the white was very thin and the yolk was dark. My photo is not showing up very good above as you cannot see the cracks in it. Cracks are like they filled in before being hatched. Does that make sense? Just like your picture.

That story made me laugh, LOL. Thanks, Sue! Yes, Zane is a real sweetheart. It's why we keep on going and hoping to see improvement. I want him around for years to come, if we can get him walking again. A couple of months isn't much time to spend to have a wonderful rooster here for years.

Obelisk has had two eggs that had a small wrinkle in the pointed end in the past week...
None with the zipper though...

I think what someone said a few pages back may be true...The birds are being treated as a commodity to lay as many eggs as possible and go poof...They're not made to stay around for long periods of time...Sort of like a chicken planned obselence...
How very sad...

I really hope that your babies start feeling better,Cyn. I loved the pic of Zane as a bowling ball.
