Zebra, my pet chukar! (And how I got him.)

What a handsome fella.

I have a lone chukar too....her name is be-bop! I rescued a clutch of eggs that the mama was killed by a hawk. She is the only one that hatched out of the 6! She is now a lil over 3 months old. I need to find her a friend too. She is sick right now though. The vet thinks it could be her heart but gave her some shots too see if it is an illness (keeping my fingers crossed) She seems to be doing better though! he is a very handsome chukY!

That's such a cute name! I hope she feels better soon.

I suppose I'd better update on what happened with Zebra! He peacefully coexisted with the chickens for quite a while, but then I noticed he started beating some of them up! I'm not sure why exactly, but he would pick a target and then harass them and take out some of their feathers and occasionally draw blood. Due to this behavior, he was exiled to the duck and guinea fowl coop, where the birds are large and feisty enough to fight back if he tried to do anything to them. He lived there for a few months, but wasn't as happy (I guess because the ducks and guineas were too big for him to pick on! And he liked to mate with the bantam hens but couldn't when he was separated from them). One day, I let the ducks, guineas, and Zebra out to free range as I did regularly (Zebra usually came back to the coop when evening began), and he decided he'd had enough, and took off. Never saw him again.

I'm sad that he left, and I still miss him even though it's been months, but at least he had a happy year or so with me and decided to leave of his own accord. I'll tell you, that bird had one heck of a personality. I'm glad that I had him in my life, even though it was only a short while.

I have one on my fence in Texas very tame it seems. I wish someone would come get him. Poor thing. Just saw him there a couple hours ago
