Zelda's Eggs are Hatching! (UPDATED with pics on page 1!)

awww, so cute !!! They all look so happy !! Did you move them yet to ground level ??

Beefer's havin Babeez! Congratulations on your beautiful new grandchildren!

To all the people asking if they are on ground level yet, what would happen if my chickens decided to hatch chicks out of their elevated nest boxes? Did I make an error in judgement by mounting them about 3 feet off the ground? I was afraid rats would bother them any lower. Do I need to make newer lower nest boxes? Ughhhhhhhhhhh

those chicks are so adorable!
love it that they were hatched in a chair

last night after dark i took the seat cushion/nest and placed it on the ground and tied the back to that table leg so it would be like the chair on the ground. i even went so far as to create a slight slope downward just like the chair by propping up the edge of the seat cushion. this morning when i went to check zelda and kids were running around eating. she hatched 6 out of 8 eggs. she was sitting on 6 of her own eggs and 2 barred rock hens eggs (one of whom got run over a while back so it was her last egg..) and i had them all marked. all of zelda's eggs hatched and neither of the barred rock eggs hatched. i cracked them open today and they were just runny yellow eggs. the father is Conway my rare and assorted rooster (mostly assorted.). 2 chicks are black with orangeish faces, and the other four are penguin colored like austrolorps are although one of those had a lot of yellow on its head. it will be interesting to see if the colors correlate to sex in any way, i bet they do. and the best news is that Zelda allows me to handle the chicks and the chicks are just like "oh no he caught me. oh well!" just like zelda! oh, so tonight when i went to check on them they were all piled up on the seat cushion again. lol.
