    compensation for dog killed chickens

Been there, done that. Neighbors dog killed 6 of my chickens. He was also remorseful, but I was like, ok. I should’ve been outside watching them, and took the fall. 2 weeks later, that same dog came back and took a chunk off my other hens back, and so I put my foot down, he was going to pay...

    Not laying

Hens haven’t laid in close to 2 months. 4 of them are a year and a half old and the other 2 are a year old. I’m assuming it’s normal due to it being winter time? I would never use artificial light to force them to lay.....just making sure everything is ok and normal behavior since they laid last...

    Chicks not roosting

Thanks you guys! I am going to put a ton of hiding places and obstacle courses inside the big run so that I can try to integrate. They sleep in separate coops and are in separate runs, so The only time they are actually “together” is when they are free ranging in the yard. those 2 b*tch hens...

    Chicks not roosting

The nesting boxes cannot be removed. I can block them off, but that’s where they lay their eggs, too. I can’t show pics, but it’s 2 roosting bars inside the coop, they would just rather lay on top of each other, I suppose. As for the 2-3 week separation, I’ve had them since March. I let them...

    Chicks not roosting

Hello again :) So, last year was our first year with chickens. Started with 10, lost 6 to a neighborhood dog, dog came back several weeks later and took a chunk out of one of the last 4 birds, ran her to the vet where we kept her in the makeshift “icu” unit in our jacuzzi tub for 3...

    making the pen cute....

I have a 4 hook shepherds hook in the center of my run that has 2 really large ferns hanging....on the posts of the run, I also have hooks where I have hanging baskets. We had an iron stencil cut to hang on the face board of the coop, which says “chloe’s Coop” as when the hens were babies, my...

Attracting Japanese Beetles in for Chicks to Eat

I have 3 huge blueberry bushes and hubby went and bought those beetle bags with the attractant. After I seen this post, I put out a new bag, and within seconds I already had 30 beetles in it. I took the bag to the chicken run and dumped it out and I’ve never seen my chickens so happy...

May want to invest in a gun, unfortunately.

Large back wound.. will skin grow back

:) I’ll stick with my vets advice. That’s why I pay him the big bucks :thumbsup As for keeping an injured bird outside, I honestly only know my situation. I can probably tell you that the farmer beside me would probably cull his injured bird before even thinking about taking it to the vet, much...

Neighbors Dog is Digging Into My Yard!

It is also legal in nc. ANY animal that is even chasing your poultry can be shot on spot. No question. I hate that, as I adore dogs. But, I have lost 6 hens to the neighbors dog, and it won’t happen again. I keep a loaded 380 right inside the door.

Large back wound.. will skin grow back

I don’t know whether or not it’s ok, or not ok....I am going by what the vet told me. He’s an exotic animal vet, who treats every animal imaginable, so I will just trust his judgement and advice. The oral antibiotics and plain water baths worked just fine

Large back wound.. will skin grow back

Because flies are attracted to the stickiness of it, and will lay their eggs in it. I kept her inside my bathroom until she was completely healed, though, so I really didn’t have that to worry about. But if you have to keep it outside, that’s the reason.

I hope I am doing the right thing until I can get her to the vet

Her butt was still maggot free today, and I have sprayed it twice today. She is eating and drinking fine, and I have put electrolytes in her water, just in case. The place has scabbed over, so apparently it’s healing. I’m still going to make her an appointment at the vet tomorrow so they can...

I hope I am doing the right thing until I can get her to the vet

They were tiny little gross buggers. So I will check her again in the morning as she was super stressed this evening after the eventful morning. So an extensive recheck will be in the morning, and then tomorrow evening. Geez I hope I got them all too. Thanks!

I hope I am doing the right thing until I can get her to the vet

This morning when I opened the coop door, I noticed something off with one of my buffs. (She’s a year and a half old) She was just slow to come out, which is far from the normal. She came out, tail down, and laid in the grass. So, I picked her up with very little resistance from her, still odd...
