I have a flock of 12 or 13 hens and a roo in a coop and I want to know if anyone has any advice on having a flock and not being home that much. My husband got a new job with road construction crew and we will be staying with him at the hotels. I want to keep my flock but I have concerns about...
So we had a broody hen that we think was killing her chicks as they hatched. She was setting on 8 eggs and after 6 of them hatched with none alive we decided to take the last two away from her. We dont have an incubator so my hubby kept them warm with an electric heater until we found our...
We dont have an incubator yet, that is why we are so excited about the broodies... we moved them last night into two nesting boxes in the empty tractor, the one hen hasnt been setting all morning, but the one has and just got out now, is checking out the new surroundings, I hope she gets back in...
I dont really have anything to put them in seperately though.....i was hoping this would be ok ... an to top everything off we are going away for the weekend, so i am starting to worry a little
Ok .. Heres our setup... two 8x4 wire triangle shaped tractors with tin on one end for shelter and one 6x7 coop ... we had 17 smaller (12 weeks) hens and roos that we hatched in one of the tractors, one roo in the other and 7 hens and one roo in the coop.
My dilemma, two hens are broody and we...
Our first every incubator eggs are hatching right now and I am worried about every little thing. Can someone tell me what to watch for as an indication of a problem just so I am prepared.
It's been holding temp pretty well right around 100 to 100.5 up till now. Now it is going down some to 102, one more hatched and one working on it. Is it normal to be still attatched to the egg when it hatches out?
We have three hatched and quite a few pips and the temp just spiked to 104 degrees, is this normal when you get chicks in there giving off body temp ??? How do you cool it off some without letting out humidity, the humidity is 65
Thanks for the info, I am hoping for tomorrow to see some sign of whats happening. We are going on a trip tomorrow for most of the day, and that is probably a good thing or I would drive myself crazy.
I set 24 mutt eggs from my flock of BO hens and roo, Gold Sex Link, Barred Rock Roo and two mystery chickens. 2 were infertile. So far I have four that I am not sure about and 18 that look good as far as air pocket and growth. THree of the four questionables have good sized air things, but...
Okay, I had 24 eggs in the incubator, a Little Giant with a fan and a turner. Today we took them out of the turner, candled them and put them in on the grate thingy. We filled all troughs in the bottom with water and put two baby washcloths in there, one we wet through and the other we put in a...
What characteristics do the road island red have that would distinguish them from the sex links? My sister in law has chickens that look like my sex links kind of but also resemble a rir.
How hard is it to find these breeds. I really would like to eventually get the lavender orps, but I know they are extremely hard to find. For now I just want to get another color, I just have the traditional buffs and would like to expand with some less common colors. Any info on how to go about...
Do they have to go in a certain way as far as bigger end up or down?? I have an old style turner with the snap in holders and I am just not sure how the egg is suppose to go in??

A water wiggler is a toy filled with water that a lot of the people on here suggest using when incubating to simulate an egg and make sure that your eggs are at the right temperature inside. They seem to be a little hard to find however.
rebelcowboy - It is the motor that is broken, so I tried what you said and it worked like a charm, just stuck the long end of a wooden spoon through the hole and voila, thanks so much, that's one less problem to worry about.
I am wondering how you are suppose to keep a constant temp in the incubator when you have to open it and turn eggs three times a day and everything I am reading says that the Little Giants are really temperature finicky. I thought maybe it would be easier to do the turning fast like ifI used the...
