Thank you. I think I might let her go back to laying. My poor leghorn x has been very upset and lonely since her friend started acting 'weird'. Now that I actually have a hen that goes broody, I'll get another chance for the cycle in the future.
Ok, so as the title says, one of my hens went broody, so I gave her two fertilised eggs. One of the eggs mysteriously disappeared, but the other successfully hatched out yesterday. The little chicky only lasted a day though. But what I really want to know is, what will the hen most likely do...
The only time my girls don't want me around the nest is when they are trying to lay an egg, after the egg is laid they couldn't care less about it. I've litterally taken eggs right out from under them and they don't care. The only time hens care about their eggs, is when their hormones are...
The eggs I get are like that if I get them right after they were laid. After a couple minutes they are dry. It's just the natural 'lubrication' that they need to be laid...
When mine peck me, I peck(poke them with a finger) them back.
They don't do it so much any more.... They are far more likely to just squat with they see me now.
I didn't ponder the genetics like I shouuld have.
Anyways, I solved the mystory this morning. Meenie and Moe were fighting over the nest box, and as it appeared that Meenie had already laid her egg, I locked her out and Moe in. Moe lays the white eggs with the little brown speckles. Aso it...
Quote:
I know leghorns lay white eggs, but I don't have any pure leghorns. They are all crossed with Austrolorps, which lay brown eggs. And since white eggs are recessive, I thought I'd only get brown eggs.
Mine are Leghorn/Austrolorp crosses. 3/4 Leghorn I think; big, mostly white birds. I wasn't expecting white eggs because I know it's a recessive trait.
So I went out to collect the eggs this morning, and found this:
The carten clearly has more than just todays eggs, but the white egg is the mystory. On the left are Eenies eggs, I know she didn't lay it, her egg was where she usually leavs them. Then there are Meenie's light brown eggs, I...
Ok, here's my EE chick. I'm not sure how old, because my partner who bought it didn't ask some very important questions when he bought it. I'm fairly sure it's less than 8wks though. Any ideas on gender?
Sorry if they are a little fuzzy, Tigga won't stay still.
Ok, I'll make sure that the bag of chook feed is mouse proofed, I already have the feeder in the pen hanging away from anything that a mouse could climb on to get it. So in the pen, the only feed that a mouse could get is what the girls knock to the ground. Thanks for the advice. I hope they...
I grew up in a place where I wasn't alowed to have chickens as pets, the closest I ever got to them as a kid was the dinner plate. I'm still pretty new to all this, but I'm doing my best to catch up.
Really? So I can add small vertabrates to the list of things that they eat? I knew about insects, spiders, and any number of plants (including fruits, vegies, and grains), but I didn't realize that they would eat small vertabrates too. Atleast not until I saw it.
Ok, so I was out building the new coop for Tigga(new EE chick), that will become a broody coop when I have the little one integrated. I had Tigga(in a pet carier) spending time with the big girls in there pen when I heard a comotion. At first I though that some how Tigga had gotten out of the...
