    feed saver bucket style feeder

Ok so my wife and i have had chickens for a couple of months now and after seeing how much feed was lost with the store bought feeders we knew something had to be done. I have researched online and read dozens of articles on byc about making pvc feeders. I thought many of them were ingenious...

Do your RIR's lay throughout the winter? That's kind of my determining factor of picking between RIR and Red Star for my brown layers.. I've read some places that without an alternate light source through the winter RIR's would slow down and even stop producing, while I've read other places that...

Dog run converted into a chicken run?

So your saying lay chicken wire on the ground under the sides of the run, fold up the wire that's on the inside of the run and zip tie. then leave the wire that's on the outside of the run laying on the ground?

    2 Hens, 5 Eggs

Seems impossible. 4 the birds's explanation could explain it, but then you still have an extra egg. Maybe your on to raising a couple SUPER chickens??? Try to see if you can reproduce the results.

Dog run converted into a chicken run?

I plan on purchasing a 10x10 dog run to use as a chicken run, but I have a few concerns. I do plan on purchasing the sun shade to use as a top (only 29.99) so I don't have to go through putting chicken wire over the top, supporting it etc.. A few of my concerns are, the holes in the fencing...

Is there anything you can't feed a chicken???

Question: With all of these food scraps being fed to the chickens, is there any chance that they will begin to be less likely to eat their feed and wait until you come out the house with your leftovers? I only ask this because that's what my dogs started doing after a while (although completely...

Crushed oyster shells - how to feed?

What I plan on doing is having a 4inch pvc gravity feeder for feed, and a separate smaller pvc gravity feeder for the shells. I've heard mixed reviews about mixing it in with feed and/or scratch so im hoping this is a safe bet :)

My coop project! With words! And Pictures!

I like the look of the tongue and grove boards for the walls. Unfortunately my budget doesn't allow for something that looks quite that nice. Ply wood it is lol

Thanks for all the great info my chicken peoples. I think my decision is 3 white leg horns and 3 red stars. For two main reasons, the lack of broody behavior and constant high egg production. Thanks for all the help! Time to start building the coop now!! I'm really excited about that part I...

I thought RIRs layed more through the winter than most brown laying breeds? Your saying red stars lay through winter that may be my best bet. Because I'm looking for a steady 3 dozen/wk supply all year around. ( 6eggs per week per bird) Does anyone have any opiniona on the broodiness of these 3...

I think I'll go with the mix of 3 white leghorns and 3 Rhode island reds. ( purely for production rates) but in the future (far future) I also want to add some black stars and easter eggers.. Am I correct in my assumption that I will have far less problems with birds not getting along if I...

The white leghorns sound like they way to go for good egg producers.. What would be the best bred to have them share acoop with in your opinion, red stars or Rhode island reds? I don't want a very docile breed mixed with one that will " bully" them

I've thought about mixing the Rhode island reds and white leghorn. But I've read that the leghorns are not a very docile breed, or kid friendly.

Hello everyone, I'm in the process of building a coop and setting up a run to house 6 chickens. Until recently my idea was to just get 6 Rhode island reds. But the Mrs. wants 3 white egg layers instead of just 6 brown. I've been doing my research and browsing through the facts. But I would like...

need advice on coop design please

I would like for it to only be 4 ft tall because sheets of composite board is 4x8. And I'll be using a 4x8 pallet as the base for construction... this way my building costs will be minimal... But I've had many people tell me now that 4sqft per bird is absolute minimal. So I'm actually...
