Could it be a stuck egg? From your description it sounds like it. In that case, you would be able to feel the egg in the quail's vent. A remedy would be to apply petrolium jelly and massage it over warm water.

I always remove the chicks cos I cannot manage to keep them in the cage. The male is very good. Although the head is swollen there isn't an open wound so yes it could be a bump. I know there was a thread on the subject not long ago but I cannot find it :(

Very nice to see a little chinese quail sitting on the eggs with the male on guard. A point of caution, the newly hatched chicks are incredible escapees! I never manage to keep all of them in the cage and one of every brood perishes to my cots.

I would be very cautious in doing so, quail are less domesticated and somehow more short tempered than chickens. If you try it make sure you observe from a distance so as soon as you see the quail pecking at the chicks you take them away.

Chicks in the picture are a week old and I know that the cal has a delayed growth. As you can see it has dried blood on the navel and I need to know it to clean it off or leave it there.
