Broody Hen and Day Old Chicks

I have my first broody hen. (Daisy - Buff Orp.) She has been sitting on the same 3 eggs for about 2 weeks. The eggs are not fertile (no roos). Can I put a couple of day old chicks from the feed store under her on day 21. I only have room for 2 more hens, that's why I didn't get any hatching...

Hen's back sliced open by rooster

My little EE hen has two big cuts on either side of her body under her wings from my rooster. You can basically lift up the feathers and the skin lifts up with them. Underneath the flesh is not oozing and doesn't look infected. She also took a dust bath and the area has a crust of dirt on it...

My favorite hen is pecking me!

The same thing happened last year with my RIR hen. A few weeks before she started to lay, she became more agressive. She would follow behind me as I walked and peck at my ankles. When she started to lay eggs she became the same sweet heart she was before. I think it's hormonal.

A dog killed all my chicken last night

Thanks everybody for your kind words. I keep reminding myself that we built the best coop and run we could to keep them safe. Thats all anyone can do right? I learned a valuable lesson and we decided that they are way too much fun to give up keeping chickens. We've already decided we need to...

A dog killed all my chicken last night

The dog was a stray and completely unsocialized. It looks like he been on his own for a while. I was scared for the animal control officer. Part of me knows that he was just doing what he needed to survive. He's not really to blame. The people who view animals as throw aways are. Thanks...

A dog killed all my chicken last night

I am in shock right now. I recently had to move my girls because a neighbor complained. I knew the new coop/run would have to be secure because they were moving to my dad's construction yard. They get a lot of strays through there (animal and human). The run is chain link, four walls and the...

A dog killed all my chicken last night

All 4 of my girls were killed last night I am so sad. I got a call at 5:45 this morning from my brother saying that my chickens were all dead and there were feathers everywhere. I rushed down and there they were, 4 little piles of feathers. The most shocking thing was just as I was about to...

Anyone want to help us choose a few new chicks???

I love my RIR. She lets me carry her around like a big red feathery football. I also love my EEs. They have so much character in those puffy little faces and I get to collect pale green and pale blue eggs every day

    Do they NEED to free-range?

I had the exact same problem. My patio looked like a mine field! I started letting them out first thing in the morning before work and then luring them back into the run with treats for the rest of the day. They complained alot for the first few weeks until they got used to the schedule. Now in...

    Question on re-homing my flock

I thought I had all my bases covered when I got my chickens. I looked at the city municiple codes online under the animals section. It said that chickens are allowed as long as they are kept confined. So I thought I was safe.... It wasn't until later that I read someone elses post about zoning...

    Question on re-homing my flock

I was thinking of getting several little yipper dogs and seeing how they like that. What bugs me most about the situation is not knowing who complained and why they waited 9 months. Small world!!! I graduated from Foothill, class of 1992
