Hi everyone! Here in VT it is currently -5 F and dropping. Low tonight is -16F with wind chill of -34F. I am new to chickens, and noticed as I shut my hens in tonight that my Welsummer had a slight lighter section of her comb. After researching it on here, I am pretty sure she has a mild case...
Hi everyone,
Very new to chickens. Have been supplementing their sunlight by about 4 hours a day in the morning and hooray! they all started laying right around 20 weeks! (I have an Orpington, a Welsummer, 2 Ameraucaunas, and 3 Wyandottes.)
They all appear to be laying at different times...
My boyfriend and I are fairly new to chickens and raised 8 chicks this year, one of which turned out to be a Welsummer roo. We were hoping due to his breed he would have an ok temperament, and we could keep him...but he started attacking me right around 20 weeks of age a few weeks ago.
Today...
Using Windows 7, Chrome that is up to date, when I went to backyardchickens.com, I got the following:

I got my first chicks ever from Meyer Hatchery earlier this spring. They arrived on May 29th, at 2 days old. They're roughly 6 weeks old right now, and I am everything but 100% sure that one of the 2 Welsummers I ordered is a rooster.
Given the fox family living in the field next to my house...
So I am fairly new to chickens, having just gotten my first chicks in late May this year. I have eight 4 week old chicks. They are fairly healthy and happy although one does seem stunted in growth after having a prolapsed vent.
I went to a yard sale today where one of the things for sale was...
So I've been reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Chicken-Every-Yard-Stores-Keeping/dp/1580085822/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1402625990&sr=1-1&keywords=a+chicken+in+every+yard">"A Chicken In Every Yard"</a> and one of the things it mentions is that chickens go into a comatose state at...
Posting this video clip of my 8 Meyer Hatchery chicks hatched May 28th. I ordered 8 layers:
1 Blue Orpington
1 Gold-laced Wyandotte
2 Blue-laced Red Wyandottes
2 Blue Ameracaunas
2 Welsummers
I *think* I have them all figured out? But I'm not sure and would certainly appreciate input from...
So I am a brand new chick mom, with 8 baby chicks that are now 10 days old! I got them from Meyer Hatchery on May 29th. I ordered all laying hens; a Blue Orpington, 2 Blue-laced Red Wyandottes, a Gold-laced Wyandotte, 2 Blue Ameracaunas, and 2 Welsummers.
Being brand new to this, I'm not...
I am brand new to chickens and just got my first batch of 8 laying hens about ten days ago. In that ten days I've learned a lot! No matter how many books you read there are some things you just don't know about until you actually have them.
I thought it was so cute when I first saw them...
So after countless discussions, much begging and pleading, I was able to convince my partner that chickens were a good idea. I ordered the following:
1 Blue Orpington
2 Blue-laced Red Wyandottes
1 Gold laced Wyandotte
2 Blue Ameracaunas
2 Welsummers
I ordered them from Meyer Hatchery because...
(Hope this is in the right section! I did read the little warning at the top here!)
So, I am very new to owning chickens--I haven't even bought them yet. I've read a few books though and spent some time here in the Learning Center. My goal is to eventually have Russian Orloff's and raise them...
Hi everyone,
I am brand new to the forum and to owning chickens. I recently bought a log cabin on 4 acres here in VT and as we approach spring iI am looking forward to acquiring my first chickens and planting a garden on my own property.
I have been researching chickens over the winter and am...
