I've checked my settings several times. This started out of the blue a couple of years ago and I've never been able to correct it.
But this has nothing to do with Silkies... :)
I hope you're still reading this thread! Did the 3 CFI pump work with your Surge milker? I just got the Surge (for my 4 dairy goats), but haven't yet gotten the pump. One I've been looking at puts out 3 CFI and I cant' find anything in the Surge specs that tells me if that's enough.
So, my Silkies have decided that they'll set on the egg at night, but they go wandering during the day. Seems to me this would be worst than them not setting at all. I know they're heading toward broody, but I don't think they're there yet. Should I remove the eggs and give them substitutes...
My favorite broodies (even though I have Silkies) are RIRs. Every now and then I get one that goes broody and they are the BEST mothers! They don't seem to want to abandon their chicks because they've decided to lay another clutch, the way my Silkies do. IME, Silkies have a timeline. After...

He hatched like that but she didn't notice it until t was too late to tape it. Poor little guy! He tries hard to do his roosterly duties, but he just can't do it. The hens assume the position and he can't ride. I really need to find him a place as a pet, but who keeps pet chickens?

Doesn't look like a Partridge to me. Some sort of mix maybe?
I think my flip-footed rooster is a Partridge--or so I was told by the breeder. I got him for free because of his foot.

How can anyone NOT like Silkies???
Actually, I didn't much care for their appearance, either, but have 5 now, and now I wonder what's not to like.
I do have one that is forever going broody, to the extent that she raises chicks to about 5 or 6 weeks, then gets broody again. Last...
I've had hens that purposely broke and ate their eggs. I'm sure it started out as an accidental breakage, but progressed to an egg eater. For some reason, they sometimes don't utilize the calciium from the oyster shells. The last one I had, I caught her red-handed--err yolk beaked--right...
Here's my take on it. Unless you buy (or raise) chickens that have been raised organically for the past 30 years, you're probably looking at the effects of GM soy and corn, which have been shown to cause abortions in mammals; and the effects of pesticides such as atrazine, which have caused...
My first broody hen was a RIR that never laid an egg, though she was well over a year old. I had a few chicks that I'd hatched in an incubator, they were 2 weeks old, and no way did I want to do the mother hen thing myself. So I grabbed first one hen, then another, and they both wanted nothing...
One of my Silkies disappeared about 3 weeks ago. A few days later I discovered her behind a bale of hay, which I hastily replaced as she was setting eggs. I didn't mark the date on a calendar, so I'm not sure exactly when all this started. So, I took 4 of the 10 eggs and candled them today...
Sad, sad story, but I guess not unexpected for those with more experience. On day 13, three keets disappeared. On day 14, three more keets disappeared. I woke yesterday to hear the hen buckwheating in distress. When i got out there a while later, there was only one keet left I'm thinking...
Pheeew! Eggs were due to hatch today or tomorrow, but they smell very, very bad. Hen is still sitting on them. Don't they have a sense of smell? Phew! Not sure if they're all bad or just a couple. Should I remove her and toss them or wait another couple of day?
I have a RR broody hen that's been sitting eggs for about 2-12 weeks. She got off the next to go eat and I found her setting newly laid eggs in the main coop about 4 hours later. The original nest had been left but it was a warm day (70's) so I put her back on her nest and closed the door. Is...

How cool! I have a Silkie that's raising two keets. The Guinea cock showed up and she ran him off! I guess he heard the peeping and thought one of the 7 he and his mate are raising had gotten loose.
