    Duckling primary feathers are deformed

Yes, active, well formed, no angel wing or leg issues. The only difference I’ve noticed is that she doesn’t seem to preen her wing feathers or practice flapping as much as her siblings. That’s a pretty recent difference, until her wing feathers started growing in I thought she was completely...

    Duckling primary feathers are deformed

Sorry the poor thing doesn’t want me to get too close after man handling her, best pictures I could get at the moment. The other ducks from that hatch are normal. I’m pretty rusty on posting and had to do the pictures separately. It’s coming back to me.

    Duckling primary feathers are deformed

I’ve hatched out hundreds of ducklings but I’ve come across something strange in one of my ducks. I have a lavender Muscovy duck that is growing in its flight feathers. I started to notice feathers that look as if the feather instead of coming out of the quill, were rotting inside the quill...

Plants that can grow faster than my ducks can eat them. Difficulty: Texas

I’m a big fan of yarrow. Soft and ferny foliage. Medical properties to heal wounds. Ducks feet are their weakness. Tough as nails and spreads like crazy. Pretty flowers. They won’t eat it in my experience, at all. Not forage. Chicory, pretty blue flowers, they graze on the leaves, but don’t...

    Snacks??

Pillbugs, June bug grubs, worms, moths, grasshoppers, crickets, maggots, catipillars, earwigs, spiders and mealworms. Zucchini, squash, seeds from bell pepper cores, lettuce, kale, chard, grass, dandelions, grass (chopped up so doesn’t tangle in crop souring and not sprayed), tomatoes, grapes...

What do people do with extra males

Extra males are what I call freezer boullion cubes. Sorry, I’m not trying to be shocking. The reality is, that it causes a lot of pain and suffering to have too many males. I make a ton soups and bone broths. Save chicken bones, from the store, I don’t have chickens. I add skinned frozen extra...

    pump for duck pond

I’m not very computer savvy. But if you google water hyacinth cage, you can find pictures. Sorry I don’t know how from web to this site. It will take up space but they reproduce rapidly. They don’t like cold, even in southern ca, they are annuals.

    pump for duck pond

Water hyacinth is a great water cleaner, the ducks will eat it all eventually. One fix, if your handy is to make a cage for the water hyacinth out of pvc and netting. Put floats around cage and fill with plants. As they multiply take out extras and toss in with ducks.

    pump for duck pond

Ammonia is converted to nitrates, both are toxic in high levels for fish and pond plants. Sweet pdz is a mineral called zeolite. It absorbs ammonia and slowly releases it as nitrogen. You want to remove it so it doesn’t dump it back into the pond. It can be reused after flushing and drying. I...

    pump for duck pond

Go as big as you can. What ever size pump they recommend for a typical pond of your size, at least double it.

    duck trembling behavior

Excitement. Claiming you as hers. There are many theory's on this behavior. You might try looking under vibrating head, shivering, quivering, shaking duck posts. It's an odd duck looking duck behavior that seems to be pretty common. Some think it's anger. Observe and go with your gut. Best...

Sick duck has now her intestines hanging out of her bottom

Sometimes giving a clean quick death is the kindest thing you can do for them. Be thoughtful, be sensitive, be practical, be resolute, brave, loving and ultimately be responsible. Gah, I'm no good at these posts. No matter what, I hope any duck or poultry have many great days and if it comes to...

    Muscovy keepers share your pics!

It's about 8' by 10' with a small stream and waterfall. It has a wetland ecco filter, that we were told would be able to handle duck poo and large amounts of debris. Ideally if everything works correctly, we will only have to clean it out once a year. The skimmer basket needs to be dumped daily...
