How does genetics affect issues other than color? Say, egg size or laying ability?
Doe the female or male determine these factors, or is it unpredictable? Lets say, i have a Jersey Giant hen and a Cochin rooster...can egg size and laying frequency be determined? Egg color?
Inquiring minds want...
We are in the process of thinning out the herd and currently have 8 eight week old Key West chickens we are need to rehome.
We are 99% certain that 7 are female and 1 is male.
Location is Haines City Florida.
oh...almost forgot...local pick-up only!
Besides silkies are there other chickens with black skin?
We just aquired a hen that is shaped like a game, has black skin a rather large comb for a game which is black/purple. Her plumage is all black with a small amount of gold under her "chin" and is a fairly large bird?
Dont feel bad! We have 20 that has a 200 sq ft coop and a 1200 sq ft run and we still feel sorry for them! To make things worse, they free range every other day all day long......now that I think about it , heck, those chickens have a better deal than I do!
We have a nice Cochin Rooster. He is about 11 months old. You can have him if you want, but we are in Haines City. My parents wanted chickens and now they want to travel so we are helping them to find him a home. : )
Unfortunately . Illinois is a preemption state. Basically, this means that a county or city can make any law they wish .
Example, Illinois law says that you can own/purchase handguns(sort of).....Chicago says that you cant.
As opposed to say, Florida where the state says you can own a weapon...
I think the OP has a valid point....theres a big difference between requiring that a vet certify your flock as healthy and requiring that
only the government can do so!
I wonder why that is....
We are from the government, we are here to help....

This is the approach we have taken and it works quite well for us. We use Delawares and Jersey Giants. Both breeds lay 6 out of seven days-large to extra large eggs.
The Delawares mature fairly early ....heck, until the Cornish cross' came along, they were THE commercial meat bird!

Obviously you MARANS missionaries just dont get the point of the of the cochin or you are intentionally obtuse.
Either way ,feel as you wish. DNA be darn, color is the thing!
Just so I have this straight, ...To be a MARANS, it must lay dark eggs, there fore, if it lays the proper shade of egg it...
