Your ducks are lovely and it was so kind of you to rescue them. I just want to add that khaki ducks can have white similar to your drake. Mine has the white spots and chocolate coloring like yours but his feathers are more striped like a mallard. Your boy's feathering is more solid like a...
Hi Betta--I found that ad on craigslist but I don't see it there anymore. :( Maybe they already found a place for the duck? Sounds like you could have given her a great home. :)
This is so sad!! Marbles was a little sweetie, I feel your pain. I lost one of my ducklings too a few months ago cause I'm new at ducks and didn't see it coming. We let them out of the brooder to play in the bathroom on the floor. They had fun splashing around in water and later cuddled...

Martha recently lost her two other, old duck friends. Martha is now alone and lonely. She has a gimpy leg, but gets around...
I read online that one duck owner used unsweetened Kool-aid sprayed on the duck pen floor to neutralize the ammonia smell. The Kool-aid has ascorbic acid in it and the packets are really cheap. I have tried it twice in my pen and have no problems. It worked better though when I removed the...
This IS interesting--so many different ideas to consider. :) Just wanted to add a few things that we have experienced. My boyfriend has been building a "duck pen in progress" for the last few months and changes whatever is necessary as the need arises. We are both new at duck keeping so...
That's so cool about wild ducks coming to stay for awhile! Looks like they all got along fine with the pet ducks. :)
I have 3 khaki's as well! Ended up with 2 boys and one girl and she hasn't started laying yet--too soon I think. Right now they all are fine together but will probably have...
My khaki's hate being chased and picked up as well. Had to do it anyway to clip their wings for the first time--my babies are growing up! They forgave me right away though cause they still want their favorite goodies--lettuce, peas and earthworms. They all come over and grab this stuff out of...
I wish mine would cuddle like that--how cute!! They will follow me around and "attack" my fingers though whether I have treats or not. :D We waste more time too just sitting in front of the duck pen watching them. When we put fresh water in their pool they love to splash and act scared then...
You're right--race horses aren't the biggest problem. The AQHA accounts for more than half of all horses going to slaughter. This article explains things pretty well regarding the greed and corruption within the industry. http://www.horsefund.org/horse-slaughter-comes-to-town-part-5.php...
I named my crested khaki Marcus when I got my ducklings. Named after Marcus Mariota, the awesome Oregon Ducks quarterback. As they got older it became clear that my Marcus was a female--of course! So I still call her Marcus and my bf calls her Mop Top cause of her big crest. :D
The slaughterhouse should never just be considered a dumping ground for unwanted horses. People need to take responsibility for their horses and really think things through before buying or breeding such a large, expensive animal. Or any animal for that matter. It will take time for that kind...
Then the real problem is people not properly caring for their horses--not the "do gooders and know it alls" trying to help animals in need. Overbreeding practices being the root of the problem, why don't you attack the race horse industry who cranks out thousands (20,000+) of babies every year...

I have 3 Khaki's and only the female is loud most the time. The males have the cutest warbling sound and only have a loud squawk if if frightened. I rarely hear them do that however. So if you can choose go with male Khaki's and the noise will be at a minimum. As for friendly I would say...
My ducks didn't like the water we sprayed on them at first. They ran around a bit then they stopped and tried to bite at the water droplets--super cute! They love to play with bungee cords though. I use some to help hold their door shut and when I let the cords loose the ducks come right over...
