my husband calls me and tells me that my White Leghorn roo is relentlessly chasing the guineas and HE is all bloody!
I have 10 Rhode Island Red hens, 1 WL roo, and 7 guineas. They have a 12x14 barn and connected is 7x24 run.
I don't know roo's age but he's not a big chicken, maybe 3-4 pounds...
Thanks everyone! I may check into the testing, Little Rock does have a poultry "lab".
It's so hard not to love these birds! In the back of my mind, something agrees that I'll have to start all over to get rid of this problem.
I'm going to have a hard time culling them all. booo hooo hooo!
P.S.
I have 7 guinea's in the coop & barn with them. Is there any illness problems with flocking the two together? i.e. could the guinea poop be making them sick? The Guinea's are very healthy but thought I'd ask to see if there may be an association.
I started my chicken flock on 7/1/09. Since then, I have watched 5 die and now my Penny (fav hen) is sick. She's lathargic, not eating much, puffed up feathers, and her chest feathers look like they have dried mucus on them. No other signs.
I've done regimens with antibiotics & antibacterial...
If I could only convience hubby to let my Penny (Cinnamon Queen) inside! I read on here one time about a guy who even trained his chicken to potty on que- so no messes in the house!
I can just picture you and your two pullets on the couch watching TV!
I had no idea grapes were toxic to dogs!
Thanks! I am going to start feeding them an hour before dark to help train, good idea. Since they do recognize my white feed bucket, hopefully they'll follow me right in the run.
I guess me and my 4 year old will have to play "find the hidden eggs".
To those who have acreage with treelines...
Maybe wear a dusk mask when around them may help?
Not fashionable (they won't care), but maybe you could enjoy your girls without swelling. Just a thought..
I have 7 guineas that are just about all feathered out (with the black & white feathers). They were just a few days old when I bought them on 7/1/09. So that would be about 9 weeks old, I guess. They are in the chicken coop & run with my 14 chickens. They are all doing well and getting along...
Good ideas, thank ya to all. I obtain medical records for the hospital. Ya know, I guess I never thought about going part time, I'm not sure if my job could compress into part time, but your on to something. Sometimes I get caught up in "all or none" thinking.
I do understand medical...
My experience (which isn't a whole lot) is that you really don't know until you try. I've had no problem introducing young ones to the older ones or different breeds mixing. Be prepared for pecking order to happen. Yes, that rooster will try to breed them, they're hens and he's a roo. Good luck!
A big hug to all of you! You all had good advice and thank you for the warm smiles.
Your right, it shouldn't have been about me, guess I got caught up in human emotions. GOD's creatures do trust us in keeping them healthy and out of pain. In fact, my heart was heavy all day and I dreaded...
I'm new to raising chickens and I do want to experience the fullness of raising chickens from chick to table. I understand why culling is necessary- especially for health reasons.
I know this is part of farming chickens but I'm having a hard time facing it. I have a little RIR that needs to...
I sure would like to work from home. I don't have any degree. I thought about chicken farming large scale, but hubby said no.
I'm 35, mom to a four year old. I have 12 acres paid for. I'm pretty good with a computer. My problem is I work for the hospital so I'm the one who carries all the...

I'm really am thinking about it. Arkansas is duck capitol, so look how many people want to hunt, but really don't want to clean the ducks. You're in Florida? I think you should incorporate cleaning peoples fish too. Wow, mobile butchering. It's crazy enough to work! Keep us all...
I'm thinking about going into the chicken farming business. Maybe turkey. Like the big commercial houses. Anyone out there doing it? Got any advice? I want to work from home.
I will have to retract what I said about Sevin. I used a product from ACE hardware, which is permethrin and is supposed to be ideal for dusting chickens. Even says so on the back.
Sorry, I've tried entering a product pic, but can't get it to load.
I mentioned I suspected coryza and I think...
