    Naked Broilers Okay Outside

My broilers are 4 1/2 weeks old. They've been outside for the last few weeks with an attached enclosure with a heat lamp. Temps are in the lows around mid 60s. I want to start moving the chicks onto new grass but I have to take away the heat lamp. The only issues is they are definitely NOT fully...

Cloudy eye/How do you give a chicken eye drops?

A few days ago I noticed my favorite hen keeping one of her eyes closed. When she opened it, it looked fine but each day the eye has gotten cloudier until today it is almost completely white. I suspect she got in a fight since a few hours before I first noticed it she was with another hen...

    Chicks eating pine shaving specks

My chicks are a week old. I've been putting paper towels over the pine shavings until they get used to the food. Every time I pull up the paper towels, thinking they are ready for the pine shavings, they go crazy and start eating all the little specks of pine shavings. I've tried putting the...

Using Straw inside Walls for Insulation?

I'm thinking about putting extra plywood on the inside of my coop and filling the void between the inside and the outside wall with straw. I'm wondering how this will hold up after a few years. Would the straw rot? Get fungus or mold? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Egg binding symptoms but no egg??

My hen Dinah has been acting lethargic lately. She's been laying thin shelled eggs but occasionally I find one of her eggs with excess calcium deposits. I have always given them oyster shell and their own egg shells for them. When she wouldn't get up this morning, I suspected egg binding. She...

    Help! Chicken in shock?

I just discovered my hen lying in the pen. She appears lethargic with her wings hanging down and her comb and wattles are very pale. She's also panting and her feathers are ruffled and matted. I don't see any wounds. The coop is completely enclosed so there's no way a predator could have harmed...

Diarrhea After Starting to Lay Eggs?

Hi. My chickens are about 6 months old. Two have started laying and I've noticed these two have some occasional diarrhea which makes their vent feathers messy. I've also noticed my rooster has some messy vent feathers too. They act healthy and are eating and drinking fine. I just want to nip...

    Deicer Suggestions

I'm thinking about putting a birdbath deicer in a five gallon bucket this winter for the chickens. Does anyone have any brands they recommend? The winter temperatures get into the 20s here. How much wattage would be enough? Thanks!

    Keeping chick from scratching herself

I have a 3 week old chick who has a bloody spot on the back of her neck. We've separated her and keep applying some peck no more. However she keeps scratching it off with her feet. Is there anyway we could put something over her nails or feet to keep her from scratching? Thanks!

    Ultrasonic dog repeller?

Has anybody ever used an ultrasonic dog repeller to deter dogs from getting close to your chicken pen? What were your results? Thanks!

Chickens Breaking Their Necks on Coop Windows?

Somewhere I read that coop windows should be a certain height above the floor to keep chickens from flying into them and breaking their necks. Of course, I read that after I installed the coop window about a foot off the floor (it's a coop on stilts). Has anyone else had the problem of chickens...

    Chick can't walk or stand

I have a week-old chick that cannot stand or walk. She was doing fine the first couple of days and then about day 5 I noticed she wasn't moving. She was very weak so I put her in her own box. Now she is eating, drinking, and pooing like normal but she still can't walk and she chirps very loudly...
