Temporary Coop for pullets about to transition into flock

I have some pullets that are about 7 weeks old. I just moved them into a temporary pen adjacent to my main run. What’s the best shelter to use in this circumstance so that I’m not trying to wrangle them up every time it rains? Prefer not to use a tarp because of wind.

Bantam Barred Rock - lethargic, no egg, pale face

My little Barred Rock, Betty, was acting strange Sunday afternoon. She was walking but a little wobbly and I noticed her neck tucked down, she was a little puffed up, and her comb, wattles, & face were very pale. So I brought her inside and put her in a pet carrier with food and water which she...

One last egg under mom, laid later...

For the last 3 days, we have hatched 6 babies. I have one last egg under mama that must’ve been laid about 4 (guessing) days later. How long will mama continue to set on it with the other chicks being up and around and ready to explore?

Hen hatched eggs... opinions on pecking..

This is not my first time having a hen hatch her own eggs. First of this clutch hatched last night. This morning, baby was already dry and peeking out from mama. While I was examining, mama kinda pecked at the chick twice. But seemed to be trying to push baby back underneath her. My question: is...

Kicked out of the coop! Reintroducing rooster...

Sunday morning we had a fox attack. I have about 30 birds, 4 of which are roosters. They have ALL gotten along as they were all hatched around the same time. That’s where I think I’m going to run into problems. Sunday morning I had a dead rooster, a missing rooster, and two missing hens.I...

    Egg color

I have some off spring from an olive egger rooster. They are crossed with a variety of my brown egg layers, so I was expecting a variety of olive eggs from these girls. But today, I noticed that the egg that had been under one of the girls was brown. Her mom is my blue production (blue...

Broody hen sitting on empty nest?

I have a hen that has been sitting in her preferred nesting box for about a week or so. I check under her, no eggs. Is this a thing? I’ve been tracking how long she has been setting.. if she is indeed broody, I might stick some chicks under her closer to the 21 days but I want to be sure this is...

    Out of curiosity... weaning chicks...

This year is the first year that our own hens hatched their own eggs. Our first round of chicks are 4 weeks old and I’ve seen them gain more independence from their mamas. But I was wondering how the weaning goes? Do they just eventually not want or need mom and go about their days as the rest...

    Rescued a duck. Inexperienced!

A friend of mine found a duck with badly clipped wings left at a park. I took her in. I’ll attach photos. But I’m curious about what her age is? She seems to peep and not quack? I don’t know if that’s normal. She follows me around like I’m her mom. I’m inside and she’s at the door outside just...

    Dog attack - possible shock

My banty rooster jumped into the yard with my dog. It did not end well for the rooster. He’s had quite a few feathers plucked and has a bite on his wing. I cleaned him up and doctored him with vetericyn. I now have him inside in a pet carrier with some water. I’m pretty sure he’s in shock...

I’m being a hover mom but...

I’ve had two chickens successfully hatch eggs. My cuckoo maran has two, and my banty RIR has one. My CM has started taking her chicks around inside the coop, she’s very protective and attentive to them. I never hear a peep from them. My RIR is still sitting on some eggs and has only taken baby...

    Neighboring free range flock.

We live in the middle of 5 acres, and we have neighbors that live in the middle of 3. They have a small flock that free range, and mine free range while we are home. Our chickens go to the dividing fence line and hang out on both sides of the fence. There isn’t any issue with the neighbors but I...

    Solutions for rooster’s favorite hen...

My cuckoo is my rooster’s favorite hen. He’s pretty good with all the girls, but she is pretty much bald. No sores. What can I do to combat this?

I have 3 RIR bantams and 3 Barred Rock Bantams. All just started laying. They were used for a 4H program and are pretty docile and good looking birds. I’m located in NE Oklahoma, asking $15/bird but will accept reasonable offers.

    Broody or sick?

When I got off work today, I went out to the coop to let my flock out. My little EE bantam was in a nesting box. No biggie, I frequently walk in on egg laying. I just went back out to close up shop and she was still in the box. I pushed her a little bit to see her reaction. She didn’t peck at me...

Nesting boxes - broody hens - dumb question?

It just occurred to me that I have a couple different girls that are likely to become broody. They’re still pullets until Summer but my question is about my nesting boxes - just in case one or two do happen to wanna be mamas. I have 12 boxes that are stacked and off the ground. If someone were...

Adding a few silkies to my flock.

I'm thinking about adding 2-3 silkies to my mixed flock. I've been reading and know there's the possibility of them being bullied so I understand to keep an eye on that. I've had very good luck with adding new chickens, some that were quite a bit younger than my existing birds. A question I...
