WOOOOOHOOOOO!!! Jemima has (at last check) 4 babies, 1 almost completely zipped, and 5 eggs doing nothing so far!!
Jemima is a blue swede, Daffy is a black, so far 2 babies are black and 2 are blue. Can't wait to see if anyone has Daffy's crest.
I'll post pics when I can, but it won't be till...
we've had a stray hanging around here for the last few days. Our neighbor next door said that she belonged across the street. This evening I came home from grocery shopping to find said dog run under the neighbor's barbed wire fence, and across the street with one of my bsl pullets in her...
we're getting rain!!! PTL, it's a nice, slow, steady rain. We desparately need it. It rained all night, and should continue through the day.
HOWEVER, this year's chickens have never seen rain, and I had a pile of "drowned rats" this morning. More specifically, my 4 wo cc's we lost 10 of the 39...
I've learned that some of the things that I allow my doggies to do are "dominant" behaviors, i.e. sticking thier nose under my hand to get me to pet them. SO, now I'm wondering about this behavior that we always thought was kinda funny.
We've had Sparkie for about 2 1/2 years. He gets along...
I think my Skizzers has LOL just wanted to share a pic:)
She got the name Skizzers, because when she was just a couple weeks old, and starting to get her comb, I noticed it was crooked. I looked her over, and though she had a scissor beak. Turns out, her whole face is twisted. It doesn't...
I didn't want to get involved with the other thread-- I understand and agree with a lot of what has been said, and disagree with some of it also. I would like to know, what you would have done in my position though...
Sparkie--We've had Sparkie, our basset/beagle mix, for about 2 years now...
So, every morning, I go out, and am met at the gate by a flock of quacking, gobbleing, bawking, cockadoodling, hungry birds. I do the "barnyard shuffle" (yk, the way you scoot your feet so that you don't step on anyone) over to the brooder, and feed the babies first. Then I go over and feed the...
I'm wondering if I shouldn't go on an egg hunt through the trees...
My 18 week olds are starting to get bigger/redder combs. I'm wondering if they are already laying and hiding thier eggs, or if they are getting ready to lay. When do they get the brighter combs, before or after they start laying?
I'm wondering if we got a pig, would it be ok to put it with the chickens? would they get along, or would the pig hurt them? We don't have a ton of property, and it's important to us that all of our animals have all the pasture they can. We are considering fencing all the available land for...
I went out into the wood-- we call it the wood, it's really just a small grove. Anyhow, my son's lt. brahma hen was missing, she's old, so we were concerned. I went into the wood to look for her, and came across a nest of DUCK EGGS!! I'm so excited!!
I thought Jemima had just layed her first...
my girls are 17-18 weeks old... I WANT EGGS!!!!
Do BSL's start laying earlier than other breeds? I have 11 bsl's, 6 bo's, and 1 slw. The 3 that are 18 weeks are all bsl's, the rest ar 17 weeks.
How do you find locally grown feed? I've done a google search for feed and feed mills, there *may* be a few feed mills, but they are still over an hour away. I don't know if I'll be able to find any in my county that is suitable, as my county allows the use of bio-solids, and all the corn fields...
how do you package turkeys? I have a vacume sealer, that I use for my chickens, and they turn out so nice and pretty! It's definately not big enough for a turkey though. How do you all package your turkeys?
We have decided that this is not the time for us to have male animals, so we are selling my 4yo dd's bantam roo. We are asking $10-- which she will then use for whatever pullet she wants, or trade-- for what I don't know-- suggestions welcome. We are in Appomattox Co., VA
We've decided that this is not the time to have male animals, so we've decided to sell our pair of ducks. DD (4year old) wants to eat them-- but well, who could eat these 2? SOOOO, I told her that we would either sell them, and buy pekins, or trade them. We are asking $30 for the pair, or trade...
As I read it, it looks like one can sell no more than 1000 home processed birds per year without USDA inspection etc. Am I correct? If over 1000, they just have to be processed at a USDA inspected processor? I'm getting ready to advertise my chickens and take turkey orders, and want everything...
This is my first time raising turkeys, and I'm wanting to sell about 10 of them. I have questions...
*How much should I sell a butchered free range (not organic) turkey for?
*I'm thinking I ought to have people pre-order? How much of a deposit should I take?
*My turkeys are bb bronze and bb...
my dh sent me this, I thought it was great LOL

I had 2 almost 7 week old bb turkeys (both bronze-- we have both bronze and white) just up and disappear. No feathers, blood, nothing. We may not have been home at the time. One was on Friday, while the children and I were out shopping, the second on Sunday.
They could fly over the fence, but...
