I got mine at Nasco. (http://www.enasco.com/ProductDetail.do?sku=C18949N) They're about half the price they charge at McMurray's... really, I've found Nasco is very reasonable on everything compared to McMurray's and the other hatcheries. Good customer service, too.
However, these are still...
LOL--well I won't tell my Marguerite--she has a swelled head, as it is!
I hope we're right that your baby is just a Marans pullet that happens to look different from your others.
Are you giving them the oyster shell free choice, or is it mixed in with their food? Sometimes letting them choose as much as they want can help. Something else that can help is Apple Cider Vinegar, the organic, unpasteurized kind with the vinegar mother in it. It can help the birds metabolize...
Here's my Marans, Marguerite. She's older than yours, so I don't know if this will help you much, but her face is pale, too:
Sometimes chicks just don't look like one another, so don't necessarily worry, yet. I had six Salmon Faverolles, one of which had dark spots on his head and back. The...
Sorry, Saltiena--I totally overlooked that yours were bantams.
Storey's says 8 inches per bird and at least one inch thick for bantams. Also, you can house bantams (according to Storey's) at 2 sq feet per bird.
Have I totally confused you yet?!!! I'm sure if you had teeny-tiny bantams like...
Oh--so sweet!
didn't sleep well last nite due to worrying that I would not hear the phone when the post office called to say the chicks were there...
You sound like me. I've only got EGGS coming tomorrow, and I won't be able to sleep--sheesh!
I hope your other babies are okay.
If the layer feed was fresh, then it must have been heat stroke. I'm sure that having fresh layer food for one day couldn't have killed them--it's just that the extra calcium makes it tough on their kidneys if they keep eating it.
How scary that heat stroke could happen in the 90s--we have 90...
Yes, you're right about that.
I think we got off on this discussion about the Marans breed when you thought I was suggesting your birds weren't being selected correctly--when I wasn't making that suggestion at all. I was initially questioning the statement you made in connection to a product...
If you are wanting more answers regarding French Marans... it is wise to go to the French.
I did go to the French. Here is the same link to the French Marans Club website that I provided earlier, but this is the French Language version: http://marans-club.club.fr/echelle.htm#echelle Again, I...
Keep in mind, too, that goat milk is easier to digest and naturally homogenized. Personally, I think it tastes better, but it does taste different. Unless you go the mini-cow route, goats are easier to handle. Even the big ones are more or less person-sized. Big cows are BIG, and you'd need lots...
I looked around, too, and couldn't find anything. I wrote to USA Today asking them to clarify whether or not the Indiana farms milled their own chicken feed or not. It looks as if they fed it to their broilers, but one never knows whether or not the tainted ingredient could be in layer feed...
Yes... there's nothing like MORE POOP!
But you're right that it will be hard to balance choosing which ones to try breeding. You DO want them to grow fast, still. You just don't want them to collapse under their own weight, the poor things.
