Just curious? Who names all their chickens and who doesn't?

I name all my critters. You have to call them something, don't you? When we got two turkeys, my husband warned me not to name them because we were planning on eating them. I HAD to name them, so I named one Drumstick and the other Wishbone. Before Drumstick and Wishbone, we had another...

14 new ducklings but drake is trying to drown them!

Thanks for the replies. PJ has been going after my chickens to mate with them and has even eyed my cocker spaniel! If he doesn't watch himself, he's going to be dinner!!

14 new ducklings but drake is trying to drown them!

My Buff Orpington hen, Penny, hatched out 14 babies yesterday. They were in the pond today and PJ, the father, kept grabbing the babies by the head and holding them under water trying to drown them! Is this normal behavior? Right now, Penny and the babies are locked up in the duck pen and PJ...

    Buff Orpington duck on nest

I just went out to play with my goats and noticed Penny off the nest and in the pond. I checked in the duck house and she had covered the eggs with hay and feathers. I reached in and touched an egg and it was still quite warm, even though Penny seems to have been off the nest for a while. I...

    Buff Orpington duck on nest

My Buff Orpington duck, Penny, has been sitting on a clutch of about 12 eggs since March 2. However, during the first week, she got off the nest a few times, sometimes for a few hours at a time. She has now been sitting diligently, only getting up to grab a quick bite and wet her feathers...

    Question about sex of duckling

I have a Buff Orpington duckling that hatched out December 9th. Until last night I was 99% sure it was a drake. It's bill is turning lighter instead of darker and the feathers coming in are darker. both signs of a Buff drake. However, last night I cleaned the brooder and left out the 2 plush...

    Duckling rejected by parents

Thanks for all the great advice. I had placed 3 duck eggs under the hen. The other two died before they were fully developed. I had hoped to get at least two ducklings. The best laid plans of mice and men... I'm pretty sure it's a drake now. The bill is getting lighter instead of darker and...

    Duckling rejected by parents

We have 2 Buff Orpington ducks, PJ and Penny. I had a chicken go broody so I just stuck a duck egg under her for grins. It hatched out right in the middle of the coldest weather we'd had in west central Florida, so we put it in our brooder. It's now 3 weeks old and starting to get feathers...

duck laying multiple eggs each day?

No, my husband doesn't do pranks. He's in a wheelchair and is far too busy keeping up with the critters to play pranks. Besides, none of the neighbors have ducks and we don't know anyone else with ducks. The eggs have a much smoother shell than chicken eggs and they do feel more waxy. I...

duck laying multiple eggs each day?

I can assure you, I am NOT joking! PJ is most assuredly a male. He doesn't look anything like the female and has the distinctive curled drake feather. I will conjecture, as one person replied, that her hormones are screwy. The eggs are smaller than my chickens' eggs, but then they lay extra...

duck laying multiple eggs each day?

PJ is definitely a drake. He has the dark head and markings of a Buff drake and a drake feather. Penny is definitely a female, smaller and the markings of a female. Penny quacks and PJ makes a more squeaky noise. I have witnessed them mating in our pond, PJ on top. They are the ONLY ducks...

duck laying multiple eggs each day?

I have a mating pair of Buff Orpington ducks. They are just now about 5 months old. Yesterday, my husband brought in 3 eggs from their nest. I hadn't seen any the day before. This morning there are FIVE on the nest! These are my first ducks. I have chickens and have had turkeys before. Is...

My dear sweet dahlia is gone :(

I am so sorry for your loss! I lost my 2 1/2 year old turkey to a neighbor's dog today. Your MIL should get together with mine. When my firstborn was at All Children's Hospital and we were staying at the Ronald McDonald House, my MIL tried to give our dog away! Then when our second son was...

    Dog attack

While reading the news and drinking coffee this morning, I heard a commotion outside. running out in my PJ's, I saw the next door neighbor's dog chasing my chickens and saw turkey feathers everywhere. I chased down the dog and hoisted her back over the fence( she dug under to get in) then went...

    kid milk replacer?

I've expressed my concerns with using replacer to my husband, but he thinks that since the breeder has been using it with their goats, and they have about 38 of different breeds, that should know what's best. I'm still not convinced. When we get them they will have been started on replacer...

    kid milk replacer?

I am getting a couple of mini Saanen kids soon and will need to bottle feed them. The breeder uses Sav-A-Kid replacer, but I was reading on a goat site that any milk replacer can kill kids and to use either goat milk, whole cow's milk or canned milk. I want to do what's best for my new babies...

    Hen stopped Laying

My 18 month old Araucana hen, Flossie, had finished her molt and started laying eggs again, only to stop a couple of weeks later. She hasn't laid any in over a week. My husband said he saw her in one of the nesting boxes yesterday and later when I checked there was a brown egg and a membrabe...

    hen stopped laying

My 18 month old Arucana, Flossie, went through her molt and started laying again, but hasn't laid an egg in over a week. She seems just fine, eating, pooping, scratching. I have 14 hens and a rooster of different breeds and they all seem quite healthy and happy. They free range most of the...

What kinds of food scraps, etc are ok to feed the chickens?

Mine love carrots, any greens, corn, crushed egg shells, and grass clippings. We have an acre and a half and we have a large compost pile. The chickens LOVE scratching around that. The only thing I don't give them is onion or garlic.
