I have never seen Buff Moderns. I know there is one guy who had some rare varieties like Gold Neck and Barred. He may have some Buffs. He posts them for sale on showbirdbid.com sometimes.
I just had a little Modern chick hatch from my pair of Lemon Blues. As I understand it, the chicks can be Lemon Blue, Brown Red or Splash Lemon Blue. This chicks is very light silvery colored. So, I assume it's Splash. Does anyone know what that will look like?
I got a shock when it hatched. I...
Here is what I found:
"The Silver Blues mated back to the Birchen will produce 50 percent Silver Blues and 50 percent Birchens, and these Birchens will be improved in their silver top color and the Silver Blue as well improves the dark caps in the Birchens."
Hi everyone. Finally getting an egg or two from my Lemon Blue pullet. Now I just need the BB Red girl to start so I can try to hatch some chicks
We went to a new show last weekend and were pleasantly surprised to have our BB Red chosen as Reserve Modern. There were 25 + Moderns entered. I...
Ugg, really! Must have been one mean cat. Mine aren't laying yet either. I really don't know why. It is officially Spring here and has been warm for a month.
I let my birds free range day before yesterday and something got my Modern rooster! All the other chickens were fine. He just disappeared - no feathers or any other sign. So, I guess it must have been a hawk. I'm having really rotten luck with these little roosters. They must be real easy to see...
Those chicks do look like Modern Games, but their legs look short to me. Could be the picture. They could also be Old English if they do have short legs. Can you get another shot from the side?
I may have some hatching eggs next week if the hens don't hide their nest again. I have a Brown Red roo over Brown Red, Lemon Blue and Splash hens. The BR x Splash cross produces Lemon Blue. They are show/breeder quality.
Someone at the show this weekend in Little Rock had large Moderns. IMO...
Okay all you Modern keepers... Can you believe just how LOUD these little birds can be?!! I was inside the house today when I heard a racket that sounded like a chicken being ripped limb from limb. I rushed out into the yard expecting to find a hawk or the neighbor's dog or some other foul...
I know, they're so funny. I've got a couple Barred Rock chicks in the brooder and the contrast is really a hoot. The Rocks are short legged and horizontal. When I stick my hand in to feed treats, the BRs run under my hand and the Mods reach up like giraffes.
Just wanted to share a snapshot of my favorite one of the Spring chicks. He's a lighter blue than any of the others I've hatched before. Can't wait to see what he will look like grown up.
Here's his sister. She's the darker blue color.

This is the same question I have had this Summer. Here is what I was told by an ABA judge who also breeds/raises Brown Red Moderns.
As to the eye color, the standard says black, but there is not a black
>> eyed BR modern in the whole world. All are Dark Brown to brown, but you
>> are...
Maybe this will help. In this picture, these are both rooster chicks. They are about 2 weeks apart in age. The one in the back looks to be about your chick's age. So, you should be able to tell for sure in a couple weeks.
