Yep, if it ever stops raining up here, I'll do just that. It would be grand to have a swarm to repopulate the hive.

:/I think I posted a while back that my bees didn't make it through the winter. I think it was my fault, as I left the sugar water feeder in there, and the hive developed mold. It's been chaotic around here, so the farthest I've gotten is to remove the top from the hive, and today I took out the...

The way I did it: I had a large expired container of cinnamon and just sprinkled it on the rocks around the hive occasionally. That worked well.

Just catching up to the thread, sorry for stepping out. Yes, Beekissed, it was a hit to lose my girls. I wondered if leaving sugar water in there over the winter was the wrong way to go. They were wrapped in construction-type plastic--maybe not enough ventilation, though I had thought about it...

My bees didn't make it through the winter. Looks like moisture was the culprit. I may take a break from beekeeping for a season but follow the thread to see what I can figure out. Please continue to share things that worked and didn't work.

Chicapee, sounds like you're in good shape for advisement.

Oh yeah, I'm always finding something new to learn. I do agree with your comments that starting with all new equipment is the way to go. It would be hard to find out that some "add-ons" came with used boxes and frames. You might want to establish contact with the Gulf Coast Beekeepers and the...

I sprinkle cinnamon generously around the hive to deter ants. They are always wanting to get into all those goodies.

Sunrise Honey is within driving range for me, so we went to pick them up. The five frames came in a white, ventilated, waxed box and were easily transferable to the hive.

Thanks. It's sure nice to go out there and hear the thrumming of the colony going about its normal routine. I got my nuc from Sunrise Honey Company in Clayton, WA in April. The queen was not productive in the first 4-6 weeks. I don't know whether they superseded her or what, but they're going...

Well, six weeks ago I was worried about spotty brood and not having the plastic comb drawn out. I'm not sure what has happened, but I now have two boxes, with comb drawn out on five frames in the top box. There's lots of brood and capped honey. I think I'm getting to the point of adding a honey...

Goodeggs, I agree about them liking working up, and I thought that was right but was "advised" otherwise. Now that I've disturbed them this much, I think I'll let them figure it out and see what happens. As of this morning, they are playing as normally around the bottom opening, and as for...

I'm interested in what becomes of Muttsfan's bees, as mine have taken a somewhat similar course since I hived them in early April. My first two inspections showed lots of nectar but very spotty brood, plus no interest in the plastic foundation. Did I have an effective queen? I don't know, and I...

Happy Chooks, how's the eyelid coming? I am assembling five more frames and need to know how to insert the plastic foundation. Do the snap-off pieces go at the top or bottom?

It's my first year beekeeping too: got my nuc April 6. They're not working normally, though. The original five frames are just loaded with nectar, pollen and something capped; but I'm not sure I have brood. The girls are not drawing out comb on the new foundation. It's a concern, as I will be...

Ooh, my bees will bee ready within a couple of weeks. I'm wanting to start yet another hobby before I lift off from the planet. If anyone is acquainted with the whole thread, is there any info about painting the hives? I did okay until I lost my presence of mind and painted the inside of the...
