My first hatch of the season, and it looks like I got two splashes and two blues. I only had five eggs in this batch, and one was a questionable pullet egg, so I'm quite pleased with the hatch. I'll have more every week now for a while, if things go well.
I"m interested to see what you get too, shanshan. I'll need to find another cockerel for next year's breeding program, so if you have a nice Black one that you don't need, maybe you can keep me in mind?
teamsunbelt, that second 8 week old hen looks like a cockerel to me, based on what I just learned about cockerels in this color having poorer lacing on the backs at this age. And it looks like it's getting saddle feathers. Mine didn't become obvious until at least 12 weeks.
You guys have helped me so much! I went out last night and looked at my BLR birds again. Of my six, I have four pullets and two cockerels. They're just not as obvious as the SL at the same age. The one I linked to, the lighter blue, isn't as good as the other one, who's a gorgeous dark mahogany...
I kind of hope it is a roo, as all of the other BLRs are definitely pullets. He doesn't have the best lacing, but that could be because I was looking at his back. Now that I know the cockerels don't have great lacing on their backs at this age, I'll go out and verify the rest of them. The SLWs...
Does anyone have an opinion on the gender of this particular bird? It was just about four months old at the time of this photo. It's nowhere near as developed as my SLW cockerels from the same hatch, and just barely grew wattles before my other five or so BLRWs. It looks pretty pullety to me...
I have this beautiful boy. The lady I bought the eggs from said they were either BLRW or a cross between BLRW and SLW. I suspect he's the cross, but I'm not sure. He's a very good boy.
