APRIL Hatch-A-Long 2015: PLEASE READ FIRST POST

My mother: how many chickens do you have now? The only honest answer she'd get is "not enough".

So even if 102 isn't deadly, it must have cooked. 6/46 eggs hatched, only 1/18 shipped eggs. :(

I added a sponge with water when I did it, so humidity was quickly regained. No worries there. Heard peeping before I left for work, so someone is still in there; the gap without new hatches or peeping worried me big time.

I thought the kill point lowered to 102 in forced air incubators? Is that not the case?

APRIL Hatch-A-Long 2015: PLEASE READ FIRST POST

Day 22 of this hatch, 6 chicks out total and only one of the special eggs (of 18). I'm worried about the rest of the hatch since the incubator read 102 when I went to check (so I removed dried chicks and let the heat out while dropping the thermostat. Then had to drop it again to get it to...

One splaah out, hatching is on! Good thing I'll be busy all day.

Peeping! Last April hatch is now in lockdown.

I second this with a modification: go shopping for more eggs/incubators/chickens - it's the only way to be sure you'll be gone long enough! I have a broody who made a noise reminiscent of a monster from the old B&W Godzilla movies, complete with dramatic angry swoopy-bite action. I think...

Congrats! This is one reason I wish I had all barred birds, much less suspense on "is it a girl?" questions.

I can see where it'd spiral out of control like that, it's my fear with this barn cat population. Or worse, not having that problem because of the coyotes.

Congrats on the hatches! The cuckoo marans are adorable! So you know my lone straggler peeper? I woke up and not only did he get out, a friend pipped, zipped, and dried off overnight. Reseting the 24 hour countdown to cleanout the incubator; we're approaching day 25 and it was an early...

That lone late peeper is out - zipped but got dried out-stuck while I was at work. After popping the top half of the shell off he was nearly poofed up and clean (no glued on membrane). Going to let him learn how to walk overnight and check for any other late bloomers, but I think the hatch is...

APRIL Hatch-A-Long 2015: PLEASE READ FIRST POST

Was about to call this current hatch off (no new pips or peeping sounds in well over a day, but when I took the eggs out to clean the incubator, someone started peeping. At least one more waiting to hatch in there. This upcoming weekend I should have some special birthday eggs hatching, in...

No idea on the air cell, may want to start a thread so you get more folks looking at it. My guess would be that it'll be more likw a wrong end pip if the aircell stays off and the egg is upright. Not ideal at all but I don't think it is doomed even if you can't sort it. Good luck!

I ask, do I have enough baby chickens? I'm thinking no...which is why there's one more hatch due in April! (Not actually crowded, just running away from me because the noise of removing the wire lid scared them.) That's hatch 1 and what is dried of hatch 2 so far for y'all.

I find that I can do 3 hatches together in one large brooder without the oldest excessively bugging the babies, then I start a second brooder. But these are all my own flock in parentage so I don't know how gentle they are compared to other breeds. There is a tiny bit of pecking at the babies...

Whew, 25 out total from hatch 2 on day 21. Officially beat hatch 1's day 25 total. Next week has some special eggs as a birthday hatch, wish me luck on it!

Part of me wants to order 25 silkie pullets from somewhere so I can sit around cackling, "brood, my pretties, brood!" (evil laugh)
