My understanding is yes they can have smooth offspring. I believe frizzle x frizzle = 50% frizzle, 25% smooth, 25% frazzle/double frizzle.

Th Thank you! And you're welcome lol. Yes those prefab coops are pretty thin from the ones I've seen anyway. You guys might like the foam board insulation for those- that way when you cover it up you aren't losing a lot of interior space. One thing we found really useful for tight spaces...

We usually move our girls over to layer feed at about 16-18 weeks of age. But we've also used an All Flock feed with oyster shell on the side which works just as well :-) All 6 of our coops are insulated We've got large, medium and small coops and have used a variety of things to insulate...

Males definitely continue to fill out as they grow beyond the 6 month point (Females too!). You'll see the body mass increase for sure. The feathering can change especially on patterned birds but feather volume usually only increases past that point from my experience in a slower maturing bird...

It sounds like you've got a fun variety there! And the new hens are so cute! I've read similar things about frizzles not being able to handle cold and honestly have not found that to be accurate at all! We don't do anything differently for our 5 frizzles- none of our 6 coops are heated and all...

Welcome @yoopergirl1211 and congrats on starting out with chickens! Cute bird you have there! Sometimes people will use the term Banty in place of bantam. There are large fowl/ standard size chickens and bantams (small chickens) and there are many different breeds and varieties of each size. I...

I candle almost every day as well! But- this is mostly done as they sit in the incubator. I just put a small flashlight up against the eggs starting about day 3. I don't usually take them out to candle except on days 7,14 and 18 to mark air cells.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. From what I see, it looks like your new bird may be a frazzle, (a frizzle with 2 copies of the gene.) The feathers on a frazzle are short and more brittle compared to a typical frizzle. Frazzle feathers can break off too which is why you may be seeing pin...

Can you post a more close up pic of the wings? It sounds like they could have been clipped at some point before you got the bird, but I can't tell from the picture above. You might want to give her a lower roost if you can so she doesn't injure herself trying to fly up and down.

Cochin Bantams and Frizzle Cochin Bantams!!

I agree with you @wvduckchick based on my research. With frizzle x frizzle, offspring would be 50% typical looking frizzle feathering, 25% frazzle or homozygous, and 25% smooth offspring. (For those folks reading this who may not know-the homozygous frizzle aka frazzle produces sparse or brittle...

She's very pretty! Well back to your blue mystery baby lol, I'm at a loss unless your black hen is a really dark blue by chance. Poor gal- broody and molting!

Cochin Bantams and Frizzle Cochin Bantams!!

I'll start by saying I'm not an expert lol- and I'm looking at these on a phone so they look small, but your rooster looks like a white to me. So with white you can have dominant and recessive versions. If he's dominant white, you can often see white birds with some leakage of black color in the...

Hi! Very cute chicks you have there I'm viewing this on my phone so it's kind of hard for me to tell, but it looks like possibly a Partridge to me :-)

You could have a very dark blue going on with your hens- if they are blue, you should see a darker shade in the hackles. With a black Birchen x solid blue hen you would get 50% black (solid) and 50% blue (solid) offspring. If your white is possibly a splash, and he's definitely been only with...

I use this version of the genetics calculator: http://www.breedbook.org/?action=geneticscalculator&tab=CHICKEN It's the less complicated one. It does have the advanced tab if you want to change certain traits :-) This page also has some great info...

Glad it was helpful! I'm still learning a lot myself! Chicken genetics kind of brings out my inner-nerd I have all kinds of papers with notes with different crosses and my gene cheat sheets...lol I'd love to get some rabbits at some point. I have to wait until we can get some more coops built...

With most of my chicks, I can tell right after they hatch whether they will be blue or black. Your blues usually have light to medium gray coloring from day one. Blacks at hatch often are very dark gray to soft black. Then when they start feathering in, your blues can definitely have very dark...
