Poor Easy is having a hard molt. :lau And his tail seems to be coming back in with more white than I remember?

    The Sussex thread!

I'm not sure if y'all remember, but about four months back I hatched a very dark chick who was a little puny and leaned to the right. Well she's still with me, with a neck deformity that doesn't really seem to slow her down. She keeps to herself, but the rest of the flock don't seen to treat her...

Mine can be kind of a jerk. He's spurred me twice, but both times I was handling birds that put up a fuss. He also spurred my dog (Weimaraner/lab mix) last week. But I free range them, so I'm glad he's a jerk. He was already about 8 mos old when I got him and hadn't been handled much. He doesn't...

    The Sussex thread!

It was frostbite. My coop didn't have enough ventilation to allow the moisture to escape. We had a couple of hard freezes; after that the comb became discolored, shriveled up, and the hens picked them off. It was a very long and distressing process, for me. This is when I got him and his...

Thanks! His comb was a lot better but he lost all points over the winter. I was pretty disappointed. That was my first winter with chickens, so hopefully that won't happen anymore. :/

    The Sussex thread!

Thanks y'all! They all have their little flaws, but I think it's a good starting point overall. :D Here's a little family portrait I took yesterday.

Eloise is the broodiest broody who ever brooded. :lau

    The Sussex thread!

One of my speckled babies. The only one with a dark (not yellow or cream) chest.

    The Sussex thread!

Guess I'm not in denial anymore. :( This was the only SS chick I kept from my last hatch. Maybe I'll get a pullet or two from the 40 eggs currently in the bator.

Here "it" is. Feathered quickly, nice tail, and slender legs. Just that comb, though... :/

    The Sussex thread!

Anyone have pics of 5-6 week old speckled pullets? I have one SS chick from my last hatch and I'm in denial. :/

    The Sussex thread!

Bemanda, 9 weeks old. He didn't enjoy being held in that bright sunshine.

    The Sussex thread!

    A grown rooster? I've got a two-month-old chick available.

    The Sussex thread!

Two baby roos I'm growing out. My own hatch on the left, a feed store chick on the right. And two weeks' age difference. The chick I hatched just has such lovely dark feathers compared to the other. I almost don't want to waste my time with the feed store chick. Guess I could pair him with two...

    The Sussex thread!

For now. ;) My speckled Sussex all have E names, so if it's a pullet I'll have to change it. I'm thinking Easy Pisa. :lau

Sweet leaning baby. No problems so far. The pic is a bad example, but the leaning has corrected itself.

    The Sussex thread!

All my chickens smelled nice, until I got some exbats at an auction. They smelled like stockyards. So I bathed them. Almost a year later, they still smell like stockyards. They are just smelly little birds.
