I know it varies by bird, but what's the average age your Marans start laying?
I know light birds like leghorns lay closer to 4 months and heavier birds like barred rocks lay closer to 6 months. Where do Marans fall in there?
Mine is almost 17 weeks old and maybe 2/3 the size of the...
Thanks for all the feedback!
I don't breed (can't keep roosters) or show or anything.
I just like pretty birds and pretty eggs.
While I don't know if she's standard, I sure am loving that sheen color. I'm just happy it is in fact a girl!!!!
When she was a baby she looked like other plain black...
Thanks!
I don't breed or show or anything so too much of the beetle doesn't bother me because she's pretty haha. Just wanted to make sure it is a SHE! Hoping the others are girls too, thanks for the help!!!
Gender questions--
1. This is a girl, right??? She is 16 1/2 weeks old, so should be laying soon, but I've never seen coloring like this on a girl just roosters. The photo doesn't really do it justice it's like a super bright blue irredescent color. (By the way she was just plain black...
What is the age of yours? Mine are 12 weeks and I was getting worried I had a roo because of the red. But the comb/wattles are the size of chick #2, not #1 so I'm having hope!
I was curious about that terminology too
So far tail feathers have been the most accurate for me, but it's never a guarantee.
Does when the coppering come in effect gender or just genetics?
Hey guys I had some questions on sexing Marans chicks.
In general, I always use tail feathers to determine. Though my last hatch I only had 2 and I thought they were both cockerals because they never really had a tail. They are 3 months old now and still barely have a tail, but they are...
I hatched what I was told were Blue Marans, and one hatched. Pretty bird. It's a pullet, 12 weeks old. Someone told me it's not a Marans (even though it hatched from a dark egg and has all the other characteristics) because there's not copper on it. I didn't think they were Blue Copper...
One blue marans hatched last night still waiting on the rest....
He's been running around in there like a crazy bird, knocking all my other eggs together, spinning them around!
I hope he's not doing damage to the other chicks all positioned to come out.
Sometimes they can end up getting stuck...
the blue coloring is much more clear in the new pics
he's a really pretty bird, "breeder stock" or not (not saying he isn't, I don't know anything about that)
That's good!!! :)
The people I know who do it, have to kill the chickens. They spend several generations picking only the top birds if they were to keep all the others there wouldn't be space. You figure that's probably a good few hundred chickens over the years..... plus a lot of extra...
Do you know how old she is?
I have some 10 week old blue marans that looks just like your pullet with the amount of red in the face and small wattles, but she doesn't have a tail like that yet.
She is a tricky bird, keeps me guessing for sure on her gender!!!
By the way, pretty girl! :)
