Mine start at the bottom and when the milk is "done" they float to the top. I believe the orange tint is the "flower of kefir" and is perfectly fine. Mine have done that a few times when I left them longer than 24 hours before straining and putting new milk over them....and I'm still alive and...

Ernie, sorry to hear you had problems with your hip! I hope it is mending steadily and you feel a little better now. I'm continuing to experiment with using the Kefir milk to substitute in recipes. When I find a real winner, I'll post it. Be blessed!

Quote: The poor chickens never got a crumb.....it was SOOOO good we ate it all! By two stacks of saltines do you mean two of the individually wrapped packages? Yes I used 2 individually wrapped stacks out of a 4 stack box of regular saltine crackers. You could use different kinds of...

I have two coops for two different sets of Silkies. I make a bowl of treats for both coops each morning. The Silkies in one coop scarf down the Kefir and anything I mix it with. The other coop isn't interested in it. I cannot figure that one out. They will eat the others things I offer, but...

I appreciate all of your wishes and prayers SO MUCH! I moved my parents in with me about 7 months ago from their home in N. Alabama. Their health has been steadily declining for years but seemed to speed up by the time they got here. Due to 2 strokes and a broken hip dad has been bedridden...

Hey Kefir Krazies, I am sorry to tell you my dad (86) passed away tonight at 6:00. He had not accepted food since Sunday and had been in a peaceful sleep most of the time. I am thankful to God he was not in any pain or anxiety....and was on no medication. I prayed yesterday that God's will be...

I have ulcers and the kefir smoothies I've been having every afternoon for several weeks now has caused an improvement. Not as much pain, and less frequent episodes. I am hopeful that it will be a permanent solution to a chronic problem. We'll see.

Quote: Yes, we DEFINITELY need a cookbook for Kefir usage. I'm trying new recipes that I can substitute it for milk or buttermilk and will post them as I get good ones....like the bran muffins. Those have been a 'hit' with everyone who has tried them. Tell us more about the 'laban' and how...

Quote: Well if you think THAT'S GOOD.....Hold onto your sneakers. I just made Raisin Bran Muffins with my Keifer and I finished 4 of them before I realized I had to stop. I'll publish the recipe tonight when I have more time. Right now that 5th one is calling my name!

Quote: So THAT'S what I heard tapping at my door last night!!!!! Well, we've had a record cold winter here...lots of nights in the low 20's which is unusual for us, but the days in the 50-60's are not bad. My coops have heaters for night time so they won't need those boas! I hate cold...

Quote: Chickielady, I got my grains from E.Marble (Ernie) on this thread. Mine are over achievers, strong and healthy! I think we should call them kefir bodies or kefir colonies...they really aren't grains. That's just the scientist in me talking. Sorry. Just another Kefir Krazy, Sandi

Thanks Ernie. I'll try a smaller strainer. When I make smoothies they get blended nicely, but I don't blend it every time. I may have to divide the grains so they don't use up the lactose so fast which may lead to the the little 'cheese' lumps. by the way, how do you make yogurt or cheese from...

PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

I'm noticing the cultured milk being strained off my starter has a 'grainy' texture like little bits of cottage cheese mixed in. It looks like bits of cottage cheese on the curds when I drain it. They go back into the jar with the grains because they're stuck to them. How do I get it to be...

PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

My grains have grown to 1/2 to 2/3 c. in volume. My jar only holds a quart, so I was thinking I probably need to reduce the grains to increase the percentage of milk. But if you have a cup of grains to a quart of milk, then I must be OK. I do give it a shake a couple of times a day, and I use...

Has anyone made the famous Gumps Bread from another thread here? Do you think I could use kefir milk instead of water in that recipe without messing it up?
