We have 2 girls on nests now. These will be the 2nd and 3rd broodies this year. Our runners seem to be more broody than most but I don't mind, it saves me some trouble :)
In NY it's a minimum of 6. It's the law. Ducks need and want to be with others. They're very social animals. I've had people contact me for a single duckling and I just won't do, laws aside.
Good luck with your ducklings, you'll want more soon :)
Agreed
Our ducklings get a 3 gallon tub when they're old enough. Adults get the pond.
Remember that ducklings don't have any oil to keep them waterproof. They can get waterlogged quick. Ducklings hatched under a broody don't have this problem, they get oil from mom.
Good luck with everyone's...
They're too old to vent sex. It has to be done at hatch time I believe. You should start to hear their voices change soon. I have 1 hatched in march that already quacks. Ducks quack, drakes don't, they make more of a raspy sound.
There's no such thing as too many runners :-) We have 6 adults and 12 ducklings ranging from 2wks to 4 months. There's 34 more in the incubator.
I've never heard of that hatchery before but good luck with them. You'll love your runners.
Here's a couple of our littles.
Just the opposite. Our house is dry, we heat with wood pellets. If I try to dry hatch, both of my incubators will get down around 15%. I have to keep water in them to keep the humidity up.
I hatched out a bunch last year and really didn't do much different. The temp are the same but you should have your humidity higher, especially for lock down. I keep mine around 45% until day 18 and then 65% or so for lock down. That's just how I do it, it may not work for someone else though...
There's no telling how long it will actually take. I've had eggs pip and finally hatch 24hrs or more later. Be patient and they'll come. Good luck and be sure to post baby pictures :-)
We have 1 blue and 1 black drake, 1 blue, 1 black, 1 chocolate and 1 white for girls. Of that group, the 2 drakes and the chocolate and blue females are related. The black drake and blue female both carry chocolate from their mom. We should get some different colors for sure.
I think Amiga answered everything right on.
I will add that even on the days we were at 10-20 below zero, ours were still out on the pond.
Our older ducks eat Purina Layena pellets and the youngsters get Purina Flock Raiser.
Their eggs are great to eat, I have friends with egg allergies that...
Good to hear. His dad is real gentle around the girls and fairly easy going. He'll probably give you some nice ducklings in the fall when your new girls are bigger. Just remember that he has the chocolate gene in him, you may get some odd color ducklings :-)
