Bob Blosl's Heritage Large Fowl Thread

There was a discussion about show boxes a month ago on this thread. Walt and the dragonlady had tips about it. Sadly I did not save that information to my Chicken notes. Google does a much better job of searching BYC than BYC's search engine so start there. Best!

Your set up must work well--The hatching eggs I got from your hatched very nicely!

Last off topic post on this for me. Sorry. The confusion may be in the name. Black Vultures used to be called: Obsolete English Names: carrion crow, turkey buzzard, buzzard. Information here but the Black Vulture does not hunt by smell...

In California we only have Turkey Vultures. In Tennessee and likely other States near them, they have a different vulture called a Black Vulture. Black Vultures eat little live animals including baby calves. Turkey Vultures are listed as being only Carrion(dead) eaters. Lucky for us in California.

Keep looking for a Broody--It is a great experience. It is not reliable like was posted. I had a Broody hatch some chicks this year but then she abandoned them. Maybe next year.

That is wishful thinking LOL! Broodiness has been bread out of most breeds and a lot of Broody Hens are not good at raising chicks.

The two from the same line(Fogel) That hatched last year did not go Broody. I would say that they will not go Broody. They are great chickens for sure!

It is probably because of the foundation breed that the cushion comes from. It is probably not a good layer, like Cochin. Breeding towards the look of one of the foundation breeds will bring out the characteristics of that breed.

Methods of Kill Weasels are known to be very cunning. Their cleverness and guile makes them first class predators, and their prey is often no match to their agility. Chickens with the back of their necks and heads missing, with its intestines out and bitten at the rear are most likely victims...

Here in California, Necropsy is free for flocks of less than 1000 . You can send them up to Three a day and they will euthanize them and test them for the common diseases. If your state has a similar program, you could send in a couple of your oldest hens.

I use paper towels for the first week or so and then pine shavings. One crooked tow this year. None last year.

I looked into frontline last year. The active ingredient did not get into the eggs but did get into the meat. The recommendation was to not eat the meat for two weeks but that the eggs were ok.

Icelandics are the province of The Sheriff. I have been watching the antics of Icelandics on Stellas Social Club--they are chickens with Attitude! and little escape artists. If you get them, make sure to stay away from the glue and make sure your heart is working correctly.....

Me too. Fermenting would only work part of the year for me any way. It is too hot here to ferment in the summer. The Kale or greens for the chickens is old. It was in one of those 100 year old free books about raising chickens in California. Gizzards grind the grains and the digestive system...
