Hatching this time of year has the advantage of the pullets will be just starting to lay when the weather breaks in the spring and then all season long. Ive thought about hatching now but the low egg count wont fill the inci, need heated area for chicks, ends up being quite costly to raise a few...

Shouldnt hurt as long as you keep the inside of the coops ammonia content down. Too much accumulating poo may cause problems in the run but I dont think the decay of the screenings would. I would dig it up a little and let them go at it. As a kid I would see the hens go through fresh cow poo in...

Im trying to ramp up production from my pullets. I have added a light on a timer to come on at 5am and last week I added some all-flock ( 18% ) to the feed ration which has already showed results. I was already using payback layer in the ration but the protein of the ration may have still been...

If I were to guess I would say the breathing trouble is most likely due to current conditions like high humidity or the other end of the scale ,dust , mold or mildew or even ammonia from feces not vented proper or even things they eat this time of year with new green sprouts everywhere , rather...

I keep the humidity at around 40% for the first 15 days, then slowly increase it by closing vents on the inci or adding a wick to the water tray, up to the 18th day. At that point I move the eggs to the hatcher unit which is set at about 75%. This seems to work for me.

I will try a variety of tomato called Long Keeper that I found at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Never have tried tomatillos. Another plant I will try is the mangol beet. Supposed to grow very large and be excellent stock (chicken) feed. These could also be frozen then thawed and fed through...

Such labeled feeds have different minerals like calcium for layers but most of the difference in labeling, Layer, Starter/Grower, Meatbird, Allflock, etc, is the protein content. I would think any mixture of these feeds would be fine for any adult poultry. One thing to watch for , with the finer...

I recall feeding chickens as a kid years ago. We would winter the hens almost souly on oats. A little wheat during the cold snaps. No bought feeds. Just what we had. We would feed a little of the second cutting alfalfa which I still do. They love tearing it apart. See the special treat at...
