What is your latest prepping project?

After moving farther from civilization last year I have been working on self-sufficiency and being prepared. I have found that the best way to spur ideas about preparing is by discussing projects with other people. If you are preparing for when SHTF or just making sure you would be prepared to survive a long blizzard with no power like me, I would love to spark a thread about what you have been doing. Please share your recent prepping projects!

I will start - most recently I have been working on 2 things. I have been saving up water in cleaned out milk jugs for the last year for times when my power could go out and my well pump can't run. I have lots but they were just piling up in the basement. I built some shelving under the steps to help store them, both out from underfoot but also out of any light to help prevent growth. It also will help with my rotation as I drink the water then regular the jugs on a daily basis to keep it fresh.

I also just acquired a generator which I am currently working on plans to get it wired into my breaker panel so it can run my furnace fan, well pump, and septic pump in case of outage.

a 1/4 tsp of unscented bleach per gallon water keeps water good for awhile...a long while ...save a bunch to flush toilet too!

We purchase cans of freeze dried foods as we have any extra money. It will store for 20-25 years, but I will open a can and use it for making camping mixes and some general cooking. I feel it is important to know how to use the food stores 'cause if/when TSHTF we will be busy trying to survive and do not need the stress of trying to figure out how to use the stores.

I have a grain mill and have a decent store of wheat. I love to make bread from fresh ground wheat. We will try to grow grains on our property, this is a farming area so that helps. A friend has given me some of his families heirloom blue corn. They have been growing and saving seed of that strain for over 100 years in Wyoming. Hopefully I will be able to grow it here in Wisconsin.

As for current projects - we are busy setting up gardens, fences, chickens, fields and buildings to make this place our "rest-of-our-lives" place. Meaning easy to maintain for a couple of old folks. I have plans to build a cider press and solar dehydrator.

Cider press sounds like a good start for some hard cider....U.P. Michigan

We have 2 old apple trees that I think we will use for cider. They ripened really early this fall and they were sweet and fairly soft and mealy. I cooked some for apple sauce, not good for pie but they mushed up for applesauce really good. I hardly had to mush them at all.
I planted 2 apple trees for pies and a friend gave me a pear tree.

Hard pear cider is good too!!!

Guess the world must be good...as no one seems to be prepping here?....either way I have to go out and winterize my duck barn. Ducks are a great little prepping bird...hardy good egg layers...good eats...I was hoping to see this thread go someplace as I could use some ideas myself.

Agreed! I figured it would get some replies! I think everyone here just wants to talk chickens! I am not intense enough at 'prepping' to post on a dedicated prepping forum.

Any other projects you have done besides ducks?

Over the years I've always prepped even when there was no such thing....nothing intense just common sense.
We actually call it homesteading...we have dabbled in a little of everything.
I have the ability to defend our home if need be. I garden, fish, hunt, have various sources of alternative energy available.
Can allot of our own food, have a big pantry, two packed freezers, make wine, sausage,etc.
Just retired as a mechanic, with all the skills related to that.I could go on and on it's just a way of life here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
