Hi all, I'm not sure if this is an emergency as such.. I think we have a disabled hen.
When we brought our 3 new hens home, one of them, Flo, was crouched down with her eyes closed. We have had her about 10 days now but she still seems to struggle. She walks around the garden with her eyes closed. When Pearl, our older hen who is quite dominant (actually she is a nasty bully at the moment) approaches her to peck her neck feathers or to chase her she opens her eyes. She is eating well and scratching around so I think she has some eyesight.
Any ideas?
She is a timid little thing and she hasn't managed to jump up onto her perch by herself yet. When I have tried putting her on, nasty Pearl just knocks her down again! Flo is a lovely hen and she allows me to pick her up and cuddle her and makes little cooing noises when I stroke her head. I am worried that if she does have a sight problem then she may not get past the bullying stage. The breeder offered to swap her for another hen but I couldn't do that as she is one of the family now. I am, however, mindful of the £250 bill I have just paid to the vet for our last little hen, Olive who despite all the veterinary care passed away a few weeks ago.
Has anyone come across this problem before?
Thank you
Caroline
