Bay Area BYCers!

Hey, I should check my local feed store, cuz that is where they get their chicks from! 3 of my hens I got from them are now 8 years old and still laying eggs! Two of them are RIR and one is EE.

WOW!!!

Hi Sunny!

How's the Barneys? (I've been spelling their nickname wrong.

) After reading the Barnevelder thread, I don't think ours are so bad. They have more of the standard feather coloring than I thought. I hope they get that nice double lacing up the tail. (Mine are finally starting to get tails!)

Goldy is settling in! Yay!

She only tried to roost in the trees twice (with me having to climb the tree to get her.

) Tatertot doesn't like to share the treats with anyone, though, so I have to give Goldy, Freckles and the Barneys treats when Tater and Gwen are doing other things (like being bad and visiting the neighbors.)

This summer has been all about watching the crazy antics of birds. I ran into this article from last February which seems really applicable as these chickens try to sort out their differences. If you haven't read it before, it's a hoot!

I'm sooo glad Goldy is settling in finally! Roosting in trees?! She's never done that here but I keep most of my trees free of lower branches. How's freckles?

The Barneys (I liked Barnies better) are doing ok. They still seem a little nervous and like to stay in the coop most of the day but they enter the large coop with all the other birds at night now instead of the brooder where I kept them for the first 3 days (and still leave open for them). They have been roosting on the middle roost so I assume they have taken a flock position a bit more toward the middle than the birds that accept the lowest roost at night since they have to fight a bit for that higher position.

Freckles was always doing fine. She just fit right in, and never tried to take a top spot in the flock. Goldy and Tater were butting heads really hard at first, and I kept having to intervene so no blood got spilled. Now, they are all hanging out together, although you can still see a little animosity between Tater and Goldy. Now, it's mostly just the stinkeye. They will get over it. I'll know everyone is fine when they start laying. No eggs at this point.

My Barneys aren't roosting yet. I'll have to teach them. *sigh* (Maybe they just have the presence of mind to avoid the whole Buff Orp hierarchy struggle.) The BOs are all sharing the top roost. No one really takes a lower spot except the Barneys.

Here's Goldy the first night she roosted high on the gazebo. The second night she went about 5 feet higher on a branch, and I really did have to climb the tree. And, I made her fly down. I thought I would break my neck if I had to climb down holding her.

Stubborn bird lol, mine used to roost on top of the coop, 2 nights rounding them up and now they go in on their own.

We just got our first egg from my group this afternoon, its banty sized, but its a first egg so it could just be a peewee from the LF.
Its a pretty round well formed light tint egg. The suspects are 2 speckled sussex, a pyncheon, and a bantam black barred cochin.

Hi everyone, im from Reno. Kinda close to SF, right? I was actually just cruzing then noticed this, and hey! Sunnys posted here too! Wierd.

good that you got an egg. I am not getting any right now. debating on whether I should eat the eggs I bought at costco.

Goldy roosts with the others without complaint now. I put the Barneys on the roost, too, tonight. Everyone was complaining about that, but they'll get over it.

Hi Lacey! Yep DH and I are from the Bay Area and when we get homesick I come on here to chat. Like ke_ben and his Okie thread. All of our kids and grandkids still live in the Bay Area, or close anyway, so we still claim a strong connection.

Nevadan's still accept us though. Even though we are one of them "darn" Californians.

Hang around, we may convert you into thinking like a Bay Arean!

Orp, good to hear the gals are doing well! My Barneys are roosting already so you didn't corrupt them too bad!

That pic of Goldy in the trees is just too funny! Sounds like she was planning a total take over! Roosting higher than anyone else.

What would Bertha think?!!

Hey I need some name ideas for all my pullets that are getting big and still don't have names! Yes Lacey I'm posting this on the Nevada thread too.
