Ohiki Chicken Thread

I did contact that seller and there birds are from your stock Amanda. They did say that they was looking to work with the Ohiki and get there birds to standard. They only live like about an hour from where I live so I'm hoping that I can help show them what to work on and what to look for in the birds.

Amanda your Crele project is looking VERY NICE! NICE WORK! I like the color on them. If you would let me know when you are culling I would like to get one or two from you. I'm not getting much out of mine right now but I would like to add some new blood in mine.

I wondered if it was someone who got eggs from me.. It would be really nice if you could work with them.

Chuck, PM me or shoot me an email and we will talk on those extra roos.... Thanks. Amanda

From what I understand it was from eggs. From me just e-mailing them they know they are not finished birds and they was very happy that I was looking to help them. I did send a copy of the Japanese Ohiki Standard so they will know the main things that will help.

well that's good that they plan to work with them. I do have one gripe though, they dont need to be listing them as ohiki if they arent finished. OR list them as project birds. I missed this listing so they may have, if so good. If not they need to understand the difference so they can inform their buyers as to how to proceed with them. Otherwise, all this is doing is harming the breed instead of helping it. It's good to hear that you have talked with them though Chuck, they can learn a lot from you about them if they are willing to do so and do it right.
Hope they do...
I'm just not real big on seeing project birds on ebay yet though. Novice hobbyist just arent going to put the time and effort needed into it I feel. There will be a few that do I'm sure. But the average ebayer doesnt even know what they are.... I understand the supplementing the feed cost deal, I have to do that too ( just have other breeds I do it with). But I wish they'd work with them and get some good birds going before ebaying them. At least that way, knowledgeable or not, the buyer will have decent birds, cause you know they'll be turning right around and selling theres the following spring...kinda a trickle down effect I'm worried with if yall know what I mean... oh well, that's my two cents

That is so true Aubrey! I myself worry about that also but I think that we (Ohiki breeders) should try and get with these people in a more positive way than we have in the past. I don't like seeing them on ebay myself but I do think instead of getting with them about not doing that we should get with them about trying to work with the breed and get them to the point they need to be and help them understand the true type and the standard of the Ohiki. Now I know not everyone is looking to work with them and welling to put the time and money in them that the breed needs but I think in the past us (not everyone) just going at it and telling them they should not do this and they should not do that is running people that might be looking to truly work with the breed always in fear that something might be said to them about the way they do things. I know this is not the case all time and some people just don't care about what they do but I do think we should try and help some of these people before just telling them they should not be selling them.

I am with everyone 100% about not selling them tell they are ready but this is just something to think about.

. :)

Before I do forget to say this:
I myself have been pretty hard on people in the past that sell like that and it has truly not got anywhere by doing that so that is why I think everyone and myself for the most part should try a different approach to dealing with this. I think if we try and help people more that we might just get more people looking to truly work with the breed. I know this might be wishful thinking but its worth a try.?

. :D. Ive been trying to say that from the first post. There are ppl who won't try but there are ones of us that will, and in the long run its worth it.

Well I too have been thinking about it Chuck. They are out there now, they still need some tweeking but there will be all qualities being raised now as with all other types of birds. There are several who have them who are wanting to work on them and that is good. I think now it is important to keep striving for the goal and help those who are genuinely interested in the breed. I have a guy locally here who is wanting to take over the spangled ones I have started and haven't given them to him yet but I think he really wants to work with them so I guess I will pass them on and let him

That's good! It is good that you found someone that you think might be able to help!

I agree.. The goal isn't to judge who is worthy, I mean, look at phoenix in the country.. Everyone has them, but only a select few have really nice ones. And very few try to test for nonmolting.. Onagadori are rare too, but we aren't really preserving their genetics in our phoenix lines if we don't test birds and don't select properly.. this is with any breed.. In two years it seems like someone can totally ruin a line.. I know, because my phoenix come from the same lines as everyone elses, but to me they are beautiful.. I also know my ohiki came from the same lines and they are even better this year than they were.. Each breeder has to make careful selection or NO Breed will be bettered..
After all, we are promoting the breed, right.. You know so they won't be endangered anymore.. I don't think this is about feeling special or making other people who really would work with the birds not get a chance.. Afterall, someone gave me a chance with them or I wouldn't have them.. And I had no previous experience with the breed neither did I know the standard when i was given the opportunity to work with them..
