if you look closely and follow one single feather i think that one feather is fluff like cotton at the low half and then traditional feather like at the top half.

Is the cotton ball/fluff covering:
"The uropygial gland, preen gland, oil gland, or oil bag is considered the only significant gland of the skin. It is located dorsally and near the tip of the tail. In the chicken there are two lobes that drain through a median nipple-like papilla. The function of the gland is somewhat uncertain but preening chickens take oil from this gland and apply it to their feathers."

In this picture it is obious that the white cottontail is from the Tail Coverts and it runs about half way up the Coverts. The Coverts are naturally a softer feather than the Tail feathers and are there to cover the tail feather base. I am still of the belief that it is related to the undercolor. Don

Thanks all.

Illia ~ He is still a handsome boy! That fluff reminds me of a stuffed toy that the dog got ahold of!

Don ~ So back to your theory that the hen's are passing this on to the boys? If the girls are supposed to have a white/creamy undercoat, how is it going to be possible to remove the white from the boys. Unless, you use a really dark hen, with a darker undercoat, for boy production only? Guess that wouldn't be too bad, as thankfully, we don't need too many roos
