If I did it the one's sold would pay all of my goat costs and maybe more. The person who's been doing it for the past few years in one of my good friends and she said get over it and just do it.

It kind of goes hand in hand with me wanting to have meat chickens and not being able to do the dirty deed.  I know if I did it, it sure would have with the money for next year but than again food costs too.

      Tell me what you think.

I love my goats they are like my kids. I dont think I could do it.

I'm kinda interested in having one goat on the place. weed control and just another pet. What would you recommend?

yuckyuck.gif Yup I am glad I have a boat, for me & the dog, and another boat for the chooks.

Gotta go make sure they are both tethered high on a tree, and unlocked from the trailers.

Now that is an interesting mental picture! I hope your plants are okay. I haven't sown a single seed this year because they'd just all wash away at this rate...

They are cleaning and re-dressing her open wounds now, and will send Rikke home with some meds.

Here's it to hope that the chicken will be able to heal the hip fracture on it's own .. we cannot afford that. sad.png

Yikes! I wonder if there are any slings or crutches or something that can be designed so Marty can heal? Not familiar enough with chicken anatomy but it would be a lot less spendy than four figures. fl.gif

Hi CL ..

Marty (Buff Orpington) was badly ravaged by a coyote. Rikke took good care of the wounds, but, the chicken could not/would not put weight on her left leg. She will hop sometimes, and then crash .. but mostly just sits.

After xray it was found her hip was broken. We are not sure she will ever walk again.

also, NO ONE is laying. I took the heat lamp out, maybe I will put back in a llittle light to see if that will kick start them. I have 6 in the layer pen. There will be more added this summer...but the one who was laying went broody - so I put serama eggs under her.

Working my way through the posts, server down all day.  Responding to this post.

It's been a while, but I finally remembered what I was thinking when this was happening to one of my hens and that was vitamin D deficiency.  It would make sense that one hen might be filling up too much on scratch (in my book love=food, therefore more love=more food, so I finally stopped giving them scratch or treats on a regular basisas I always gave them too much.)  I never had a problem with this at midsummer.  Calcium, oyster shells, egg shells mean naught if they don't have vit D to process it, and it can be difficult for them to get enough of it naturally this time of year.

So, even though I only had one hen doing this, I stopped giving the scratch and the problem disappeared.  Can't say for sure this was truly the reason, but nevertheless it worked.  We use the pellets.

I've heard castor oil drops can help.  ?????
