Today we installed a gravity-based nipple water system in the garage pen.  I haven't actually seen them drink from it.  I'm hoping they'll learn how.  We tried to show them what to do.  I'm not exactly sure how to know if they've got the idea down or not without sitting in the garage watching them until I see each of them drink.  Any suggestions?

I've actually been looking into getting that system too! Let us know how it goes, I think it's much better than hauling water and cleaning shavings out of water's!! Glad they're doing well!

Glad your back!

Just switched mine to nipple waterers yesterday. I left the other water in for the day yesterday and pulled it last night so they would be thirsty this morning. I showed them this morning and after 1 got it they all followed suit. Pretty easy. And I agree that not having to clean poop and gunk out of the waterers all the time will be fantastic. celebrate.gif

Awesome!!  yea, I can't wait! Where did you get yours?

I got them off of Amazon. Somone makes them. They are only quart size with one nipple but they are great for adding a few around the run. I am going to make a 5 gallon bucket one. I ordered the nipples off of QC Farm Supply. Cheap and easy. I would look at bynaturehomsteads post about what they have. It looks pretty easy.

Thanks!!

And ya, no more CHICKENS! I am only supposed to haev 4, and now have 5 lol but we are still waiting to see what Flash is. I am still thinking she is a she, but who knows.. lol Just wait for a cackle or a cock a doodle do! lol

Honestly, I'm kinda hoping we have another roo or two that we can get rid of; I know I have a few too many girls for our size coop. 8 would truly be ideal space-wise but 10 is still easily doable. We have 13 and they're growing so fast! I wouldn't mind selling one or two now and then getting rid of any roos if they turn out to be so. Some are listed on CL right now, hopefully we will have some takers.

Good luck!! You want a roo I am praying ours is not. Ha Ha!!! My daughter prayed tonight that God would make sure that Flash is a girl, she said "God, I am raelly praying hard right now for Flash to be a girl chicken, you already have 4 of our chicks with you and if Flash is a boy we haev to get rid of him, and well God it hurts to much to haev to say goodbye, so please please please God, let Flash be a girl, and Thank you for a good day, Amen"  she is such a sweety!

Oh That's too cute!

UGH!!!!!!   So I did a total bird count of my birds.  found out all my speckled sussex chicks were gone and 1 of my golden sexlinks.  Not sure if the dog is getting them at all because the 34 year old doesn't see it.  He just see's the dead bird and figures it is the dog because she is not chained up.  We do have 10 tame cats and who knows how many wild ones.  And out of the 4 birds he only found 1 body.  So it really makes me wonder.

After dropping off hay at friends, chicken math struck me.  I ended up taking a chicken home.  She had rescued it from a cat.  So he is now in isolation cage in my house and he is hurt.  Almost like he can't walk right.  Although he can move both feet and legs just fine.  I looked and he appeared to have a few scratches on him which I cleaned up.  No punctures that I could see.  I did a very complete examination of him.  He wasn't too happy bout it at all but I wanted to make sure...  Tomorrow I definately think I need to get him some antibiotic of some sort as prevention.  He is eating and drinking just fine.

Any suggeestions about what would be best?

thanks everyone for letting me get my rant out.  I honestly want to scream today with everything going on..  But I did get to measure the windows in my new house so I can make the curtains I want.

now back to our normal chicken math:  2 chickens + 1 chicken = ????

Sorry!  hugs.gif  maybe tomorrow will be better!    good luck with the chicken!

I lived in Underwood, WA and was sleeping since I had worked night shift. I had to do a parts run to Yakima on the 24th. That was not a fun trip.

Nature:  I built a bucket with nipples...I can't get the birds to use it. Course I still have their bucket of water to dip from. I dont' want to take it away from them. How do you teach them?  I tried to hang something shiney off of it so they would go for it...but NO. Still nothing.

I've had one for four or five months - tried teaching them how to use it - nope. I did take the waterers away at first - but they still didn't find the water. When I gave them a waterer back later that day they all drank like crazy. So I never took the bowl water away again.
