This is insane. Instead of having a nice, simple, mild-climate setup, I'm having to reboot the arrangements from this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...ay-night-so-im-nervous-advice-wanted.1514590/

That is, set up both the Big Red Bulb and the brooder plate together -- because it's going to threaten frost the next 2 nights.

Totally ridiculous! I should be planting tomatoes and worrying about keeping the chicks cool enough on sunny afternoons.

I would take frost. We are expecting 3-6" of snow tonight into tomorrow here. Half hour north of me is looking at 10-12".
Chickies will be staying in the house a few more days before I dare put them in the outdoor brooder.

It's the fact that it's so unexpected for my location at this time of year.

If it were normal for my area I'd already be set up for dual heating instead of jury-rigging it in the rain. (DH makes it clear that I am only borrowing his best, extra-heavy-duty extension cord and can't keep it as chicken equipment).

We're in a cold snap here too. I'm skipping the outside brooder for now and put a big cardboard box into service for a couple days in the house until it warms up again. Snow flakes have been flying and I don't think we'll get much accumulation, but the cars going by now have their windows scraped. We're out of propane also and didn't realize we were getting low so the house has been hovering in the 50s or so, but warm enough to be ok with just a heat plate for the new babies if we keep them near the incubators.
