Bleach or vinegar in water?

This web site:https://www.shagbarkbantams.com/the-many-uses-of-oxine-ah-animal-health/ that isaiah53 posted give you directions for use.
I believe you just pore it into the water as per directed.
I did read that article. I was just wanting to clarify if isaiah53 used the citric acid to activate it since they said I would need it, but the article says to not activate it with the citric acid, in which case I would not need it. Unless I read wrong...I will read over the link again.

I know I was confused too. I think activated is for one use and not activated is for keeping drinking water clear. What the other use is I don't know.

As Mraya mentioned it's for two different uses. I use the activated method for cleaning and sanitizing. I will use it not activated for drinking water.
You could call Best Vet on their 800 number and ask what their recommendation is. Regular bleach dissipates in 24 hours so there's a constant need to add it. It also does not kill as many the pathogens as Oxine AH. I understand this mix (activated at least ) lasts 7 to 10 days. I just purchased it and will use it for the summer only when our water gets too warm. Winter spring and fall I have no need for it. I typically dump and refill My water as I use rubber buckets year round. But in the summer we reach temperatures of 40C and I want to keep my water from building up algae and bacteria. I will use it in the winter to disinfect my water buckets. I will also use it to spray my barn when I do a clean up.

You can read more on it here if you prefer.

I use ACV for the probiotics. Not really for keeping my water from getting algae in it. If you search the forums for Oxine AH you'll see some lengthy posts on it.

Hope you find a solution.

uh imagine drinking watery bleach, its gonna kill you, so if you love your chickens then dont give them bleach.
Um, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that's how we treat tap water. Chlorine or Chloramine. If you're on the same water as St. Louis, it looks like you're chloramine http://www.stlwater.com/ccr.pdf but if you're giving your chickens tap water, you're giving them bleach or something very similar.

Just b/c bleach CAN be used in water, that does not mean that it's a good idea. I don't want to get sucked into an other argument about what folks should or should not do. But for myself, and the water I choose to drink, and the water I choose to give to my flock or other animals, there will be no bleach.

If there's a water quality issue, and the well needs to be shocked, that's a different matter.

X2...

If you have drinkable water (not contaminated, safe for human consumption from the tap) then plain water is best. If you are talking about unsafe for drinking water, then it needs to be boiled or treated, and very low dose bleach can be used for that.
It tastes terrible!!! Had to do this overseas years ago, when the water supply was unsafe. Definitely not a good idea unless there's no other way.
I dump and rinse their waterers, add nothing, and give fresh water. It's fine.

Thanks for all the responses. I think for now I will just do a rinse with bleach solution and then rinse with fresh water before filling the barrel back up again. That way the chickens won't be drinking additional chlorine, and I will feel better about any bacteria that may be growing in the water line. I got rid of all my hanging waters a while back, and when I put this system in I did not consider how to go about cleaning it. It still beats having to fill 15 waterers a day.

Thanks for the link about the oxine AH. I might try that in the future, but also there were a lot of other interesting articles on that site that I got to read.

I have been told you can put bleach or Apple cider vinegar in chickens water to clean and sanitize.

ACV is scientifically proven to do nothing except to preserve cucumbers and other assorted vegetables, even if you consider the cucumbers as being saved or "preserved" when their "SAVED" state is very different from their NATURAL state. this will be a great time to post all the scientific articles in your possession listing the "many benefits" of ACV.

Besides Chlorine being used to sterilize public water systems unseated chlorine bleach is touted by the Department of Homeland Security as a nifty way to make unsafe drinking water safe again to drink as well as purifying drinking water for long term storage in case of a natural or man made disaster that knocks out the public water supply.

Now it is the ACV folks turn to list the many benefits of Natural or un-pasteurized ACV and list the many health benefits of consuming vinegar eels and the bacteria colonies associated with N-A-T-U-R-A-L ACV. Here, let me help you, here is a image of the almost microscopic vinegar eels teeming in natural, un-filtered, and non-pasteurized ACV. drink up Y'all.

For what ever its worth I have seen healthier looking people in the police morgue than the young lady who is making this commercial for ACV.

Now to answer one more question.

Yes mam, that is parasites (actually nematodes) swimming in that organic ACV and it is in no way a vegan food because when you drink it you are also consuming worms a.k.a. nematodes. a.k.a. vinegar eels.

One other thing that you may wish to consider. Everything that goes up must come down. Vinegar eels have one mouth and one anus and everything that goes in must eventually come out in one form or the other. Drink up now, you hear, times wasting.
