Chicken Breed Focus - Australorp

Thsee two are my first Australorps. This is Stevie and Olive. They are the friendliest breed I have encountered. They seek us out when we are in their yard or ours. One of them laid her first egg today at 20 weeks...so Eggcited!

Got two Black Australorp chicks a couple weeks ago. They are so curious, and my do they grow fast!

Here's a recent picture of Mary. We live in Australia, so she has the shape and features of Australian standard. Also, she's got her winter feathers.

Anyway you can see how large and dark her eyes are.

To me, she doesn't look like a black chicken, she looks like an Australorp.

3 out of 4 of my Aussie girls! The 4th didn't want her picture taken I guess . They really are great chickens though, and wonderful layers!

I love our BA's! We have three adult hens and (8) 15-week-old, soon to be pullets (seen below). They are even-tempered, excellent foragers, and tolerant of heat and cold. Ours lay year-round here in Montana, 5-6 eggs per week in the warmer months and 3-4 eggs per week in the winter. Our coop is very minimally heated and not insulated, and it sometimes gets below zero in there. Of our original mixed flock of 13, we had 4 BA's. A mother fox discovered our flock early this spring and killed 8 of the original flock, with a BA being the last killed before I got the fox. The survivors? 3 BA's and one EE! That is why, when it came time to replenish our flock, we got 8 BA's and five other breeds. My only knock on the BA, if you can call it one, is that ours get broody 2-3 times per year and faithfully sit on the nest for 20 - 25 days without laying. I just let it happen, and don't try to break them, as that is in their nature. Highly recommend this breed for laying, friendliness, and good survival instincts!

Hey everyone, my BAs are going on 12 weeks old! Believe I have 4 boys and 4 girls so going to have re-home some I’m afraid. Currently, they all get along. But not too much longer and the hormones will be kicking in (or so I read..). Guess I’ll have to re-home some hopefully before it gets ugly. Glad I found this thread!

Here are my four at 4.5 weeks...
(the parents are blue australorps... so the charcoal / black colours aren't surprising... light grey on the other hand.... she's almost a "lavender"... quite pretty.)
