Or did you use charcoal for your avy pic? I can't see it very well....

I did that a couple of years ago, I have improved since but I thought this guy looked friendly so I chose him, I want to draw a better one soon. I think I used a 4B, and maybe a 2B but I can't remember HB just can't give you those dark shades. I love getting new pencils, haven't had any for a while now, I just have a tub of stumps.. Sticky stumps now because of the juice.Yep!
It also kinda depends what you are doing. I see from your avatar you have a extremely detailed style- HB would probably be a bit trickier for getting the shading into that kind of work.
I'm no good at faces, but when I did try one, using my regular HB pencil was not that great..... I do plan to upgrade my pencils soon, because as you said before, I have noticed a difference.
