What color is this rooster?

So would it be plausible to assume that Cackle's breeders aren't pure for Black-tailed Red? And that it's possible they don't cull off-color individuals from the breeding program?
Man I like Cackle but ya I don't get it.
That bird sure looks like it has silver which would have no reason to be in a BTR line.
It makes no sense to me where it would of came from and why. I understand it's a newer variety but why have Silver in the mix at any point? Beats me.
Silver is dominant to gold so it wouldn't go sight unseen. They would of had to have seen it along the way and they would have to see it in their breeding pens now.
Maybe that rooster has something else going on to make his.color but idk what it would be.

I wonder if they crossed another variety of Marans in to try and improve the egg color?

What though? Black copper is gold and I assumed the darkest egg layers.
Wheaton is also gold based. Cuckoo would probably be silver but I didn't think they were known for really dark eggs and with extended black and barring it wouldn't be my choice.
There's also birchen. They're Silver based so

Yeah, I thought Cuckoo would be silver but an odd choice. Birchin, possibly because they have the Columbian gene? I don't know if Marans are Recessive or Dominant White, but I know Orps can be gold or silver-based under the white.

It's just odd/puzzling to see such an atypical bird some out of a flock or Black-tailed Red Marans without saying it's a mix and not pure.

Birchen doesn't have the Columbian gene. They're just a straight forward pattern like duckwing or wheaton.
Not a lot of extras going on so wouldn't be a terrible choice. Well except that whole silver thing
Birchen is the silver version of BCM.
Whites are Recessive and could hide everything.

I used to raise BCM and was trying to use everything with the most color to get more females with more color in the hackles. I hatched and raised a male that had a completely colored chest instead of the black.
Used to be a Marans guy here that was creating patterns in Marans. @Chooks man you still around?
He said that rooster of mine would be great for a black tailed buff project.
Maybe he can shed some light here.

I don't agree with this.
The rooster looks silver/gold to me too and you can't have a female that's both so no on a female that looks like that rooster.
You also wouldn't need a silver hen bred with that rooster. A rooster like that bred to a correct black tailed red hen would produce some males like him.
What? I mean the picture in the post I quoted. One parent could be black tailed red and the other could be silver to produce the gold/silver split rooster that the thread is about.

I'm doing good, man. Glad to see you're still here.
Seems so many of the old times members that knew stuff have disappeared.
Glad some are still hanging around. I take it you're still working with the Marans, huh?
