This is a brief history of how I entered into the wild and wonderful world of chickens... and how I came up with my goofy member name. I'll start with the name. When I joined BYC, I tried every catchy name I could think of, but all were already in use. I don't like numbers in my screen name, so I started thinking outside of the box. Cocka-doodle-do sounded blah, so I found another way to spell the sound of a cocky old rooster... thus the birth of Ur-ur-ur-urr! Now on to the chickens. Way back when, in 2015, after becoming disgusted with the price of eggs, I decided to start my own backyard flock of laying chickens. Little did I know the journey I was about to embark upon. From the beginning, it was very interesting and exciting. From building a coop and run, buying my first hens, buying an incubator and amazingly hatching chicks, building a brooder, and planning the next stage of development... there hasn't been a dull moment! Okay, maybe the incubation process had some slow moments, but everything else has been a blast! Of course there has been some disappointments along the way, such as not getting the birds I really wanted right away, but that's still in the works. There's also the time I bought a couple of Lavender Orpingtons I had to dispose of because they had infectious Coryza... but it's all been part of the learning process.

I've made a lot of friends since joining BYC, and the discussions I've had here are priceless! The knowledge that's available at the click of a button is unbelievable, and much better than wading through tons of data by searching on the web. Most questions get answered right away, or are referred to someone with experience with particular issues. Being able to help others with familiar issues is always rewarding in itself. Not only that, but carrying on mini-conversations with people all over the world and sharing cultures and ideas is an added bonus.
