Originating in southeastern Europe, they became very popular in Turkey, where they were known as the "Sultans Fowl." The Sultans of Ottoman Empire would keep them in their gardens.
I have had Sultans now for over ten years and these I call my fancy birds! I have won best of breed with them at the National and the big Federation shows for many years. They are a docile bird and should not be mixed eagerly with other birds for fear of being picked on.
