How to wash a chicken

In a previous article i talked about showing chickens and that your birds need to be washed before shows. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/showing-chickens.74677/ ) So in this article i will explain the steps needed for washing your bird.

Some reasons you may need to wash your chickens are you plan on showing them, they got sprayed by a skunk, are injured/soiled themselves if sick, or there just dirty.

~cup
~toe nail brush (only if you want to scrub feet)
~ hair dryer

1. Gather all your supplies together. Make sure your supplies are all in reach and that your buckets are filled with lukewarm water. One bucket will be for rinsing and one for soap.
2. Make sure you have a good grip on your chicken. They do not like being washed so they will flap their wings.
3. Soak the bird in one bucket and wait until any poop or crusty items become lose before you pull them off. You can also scrub their feet at this time.
4. Switch to the other bucket and gently lather the chicken in soap.
5. Switch back to your first bucket you used. Use the cup to rinse the bird off until all soap is out.
6. Gently squeeze extra water out.
7. Gently wrap chicken in towels.
8. Clean any wounds at this point.
9. Use a hair dryer on low. making sure it doesn't get to warm for the chicken.
10. Now you have a fresh and clean bird.
