I was running out of room inside, so I built a brooder box for my 4 week old chicks until they are big enough to be integrated with the flock.
I started with a rough draft for the bottom stand so it would be up off the ground.
When I had the base completed, I used a crate an auger came in and sat it inside the base frame. I then extended the height using 1"X4" boards, as well as added support.
Then I used 1/2" plywood cutting it to fit inside for both ends, the back, and the bottom.
Then put 1/2" hardware cloth on the front. Then using 1"X2" boards made the frame for a split top and cut 1/2" plywood for the top with a 3" overhang. The solid top was to heavy for me to lift open. I used a 1"X4" board attached to one side to keep rain from getting in. I also used 4 hinges (2 on each side of the top) and 2 haspes to put pad locks for those two legged perators.
I would do different is I would have put 1"X4" boards around the bottom of the legs, so it won't sink into the ground. I would also made the overhang 3" to 4"s longer. It needs to be paint yet. The finished size is 4' wide X 7 1/5' long, total height is 4'4", from the ground the legs are 2' and the box is 2'4".
