So, you're saying "When will my girls start laying?". You've come to the right place.
This article is not going to go into too much detail, but it will just state the main things you will see happen when your pullets are about to lay their first eggs. I will also give some tips.
Here are the things you will probably notice the most.
1. You will see your girls start exploring the nesting boxes.
2. When you walk up to them, one might suddenly freeze, spread her wings a tiny, and squat down.
3. Their combs will get bigger and most likely turn bright red.
4. A day or so before they lay their very first egg, you might see them acting a bit more nervous than usual.
How about we dig a little deeper into each one?
#1: You will see your girls start exploring the nesting boxes.
The pullet who is going to lay the egg will know when it's coming, and she will 'think', "I need to search for a place to lay my egg safely!". Therefore, she will need to search around a little. Tip: Make sure your nesting boxes look appealing to the pullet so she will decide it's a good place to lay. Some chickens can't figure it out and you will find an egg in the middle of the coop or run.
#2: When you walk up to them, one might suddenly freeze, spread her wings a tiny, and squat down.
This action is usually called the "egg squat". It means that your pullet should start laying in about a week. Lots of my girls did it.
#3: Their combs will get bigger and most likely turn bright red.
This will happen about a week or two before they start laying. I'm not sure exactly why.... I haven't looked into it yet.
#4: A day or so before they lay their very first egg, you might see them acting a bit more nervous than usual.
This is because they know an egg is coming and they are not exactly sure what to do.
Now lets look at some pictures of chickens in/around the nesting boxes.
^ The one above is Kiwi exploring the nesting boxes.
^ This is Melody going inside to lay an egg.
^ Above is a nesting box that has a good amount a wood shavings and also a golf ball.
You can use golf balls and/or fake eggs to help your chickens know where to lay their eggs. They will think "Oh, someone else laid an egg here so it must be safe." I still use them even though my girls are experienced. Tip: Use something like wood shavings or hay in the nesting boxes. The girls won't lay there unless it's comfortable.
Another thing I want to share: Most flocks have a favorite nesting box that everybody wants to use, and sometimes a hen (or pullet.
) is in the nesting box that everyone loves and a different one also has to lay. Only sometimes they will choose a different box..... get ready to find an egg in the coop or run!!
Don't worry, I occasionally get an egg that's misplaced.
Sometimes they just can't hold it until the other one is done.
