I decided to drive down to my voting place after I dropped my oldest off at the bus stop this morning so that DH could stay home with the younger one. Won't have another opportunity to do it today so this is how it had to be done.
I'm nearly to the voting place when out of no where, a huge buck comes running like a bat out of heck straight at the side of my car. More accurately, right at ME. I gasped and swerved away from it (I realize you aren't supposed to swerve, but it was just a natural reaction. I didn't think about it, I just did it), and had I not, I think I might be dead right now. I heard the crunch of antlers smacking into my car and a thump as its body caught up with its head... however, I am still driving forward as there is some traffic coming behind me and my car is not disabled, however badly I might be shaking. I get to the voting place which was less than half a mile down the road and park. It was still too dark to see if anything was done to my car. By the time I got out of voting though, there was enough daylight to inspect the damage. First thing I notice is the huge gob of deer snot/spit all over my window right next to where my head would be. I follow the trail and find a bunch of deer hairs stuck under the rubber lip of my window well in the upper right hand corner of my window (driver's side window). I find a deep scratch in the black trim finish just above the window on the passenger side, which I assume came from the antlers. Then I notice a dent that looks like someone took a tube or baseball bat and smacked a groove running from the little window behind the passenger window, all the way to the back of the car. All in all, it could have been a lot worse, and I think someone skilled will be able to use those little suction thingies to pull the dent out. There isn't any scratches on that part, and minor scratching overall.
And, I have changed my mind about hunting. My father-in-law kept asking me to go with him, and now I think I will.
I've been hearing the statistics of car/deer related deaths and how that number is on the rise, so it's time to cull them back a bit. It will be good to have my freezer filled for the winter with meat too.
Yes, I am still shaking.
