Went to vote, got hit by a deer

Glad you're okay....who knew voting was so dangerous!

Seriously, my hubby is a deer magnet. We have lots of meat in the freezer labeled "road kill 2006, 2007, etc"

One time he hit a nice buck, similar story to yours...he took off the entire side mirror...anyway, my husband gets out of the truck to see how bad the deer is hurt and it is laying half in the road and half in the ditch. So, he grabs the antlers to pull it out of the road so that no one else hits it (morning traffic) and the darn deer stands up and looks at him while he's holding his antlers!!!! Good thing for him the deer was so dazed and confused or it could have gotten ugly.

Just be glad that it wasn't more serious and good luck if you start hunting!

so glad your ok,
I have a deer story too! DH cousin drives one of those small school buses and she had dropped off all the kids and was bringing it back to to the busyard. She was a little upset because her husband had just left on a 3 day deerhunting trip and she was left home with the kids.
Well I'm sure you know where this is going. Yup she hit a huge 5pt buck had her father dress it out for her and her DH comes home with nothing.
He never heard the end of it, till she divorced his a$$ cause he wasn't bring her but he was bringing the girlfriend.

Thank goodness you did swerve and are okay.

If you had not swerved he would have probaly came through the window and that could have been fatal. Deer bound out in traffic a lot and it is frightening.

About 15 years ago a dear friend was coming around a blind curve and there was a huge buck in his lane running towards him. He had no time to do anything. As he came around the curve the deer was there and the deer was hit. The tragic part..the deer when hit went up onto the hood of this suburban, slide forward and came through the windshield antlers first. It pinned my friend to the seat and he died before help could arrive. Those deer with antlers are nothing to mess with.

Cetawin that's aweful , so sorry you lost your friend
A couple of years ago I was taking my Lhasa to the groomer. He was sitting in the front seat. I was driving along and all of a sudden I had what I guess some people would call a vision. It flashed in my head seeing a deer in the road, braking hard and me trying to grab dusty(the Lhasa) as he flew through the windshield. I immediately slowed down surprised by the violence of the vision and as a turned around the next bend there was a doe standing in the middle of the road.
That vision saved my dog's life.I said a little prayer thanking the Gods.

I had a doe do that to me in the middle of an August afternoon two years ago. She ran out of the woods diagonally from the back. Her front shoulder hit my door and then her hip swung around and hit under the driver's side rear window. She went down on a fairly busy road. She eventually hobbled off into someone's front yard on three legs. We called the state police to come take care of her. I suspect someone got a freezer full.
Glad you are okay! They are so BIG!

Thank you all very much for your responses. I've calmed way down and actually posted the story on CNN's iReport last night. It actually made CNN's front page for about 15 minutes. I thought that was funny.

Sure felt like intimidation!

Cetawin, oh my gosh. That is exactly what I was thinking when I saw the antlers. I'm so sorry about your friend.

purr, wow... that's incredible. Thank goodness you "saw" it ahead of time!

In Michigan, it could have been worse. It could have been a moose. Then you would have had to back up and hit it again just to make sure it got in the freezer.

I hate that shaky feeling after a big adrenaline rush like that.!!! Glad you're okay.

I'm still waiting for DH to bring me a deer home for my freezer. But friends do give us different types of game from time to time(usually when they get tired of eating it). I haven't tried any of the recipes from these site but I sure want to, they sound delicious!! Even people that get the pleasure of eating it regularly sometimes need new ideas. The last one is all native american tribal recipes. I have used some non game ones from there that are really good!

Glad you are fine. So often cars are totaled! Deer against cars on the rise is only one of the reasons why we should up the limit and extend the season. Less deer mean healthier deer, less diseases spread amongst them. This weekend is our last of the season, DH is taking DGD out for the first time, she still has 2 yrs. before she can hunt though. She has been asking to go since she was 3!
